Interview with Dave Bruce

Have you always wanted to be an artist? When did you get the song writing bug?
Ever since I was a little kid I have been writing my own songs as a form of self expression. Words don’t exactly come easy to me when it comes to talking about my feelings so music was the perfect outlet. The rush I get from writing a song is indescribable and being an artist beings me joy!
Briefly describe your journey to date.
I launched the GONE MAGIC project in 2023 after several years as a hip hop artist. DJing in clubs made me want to play my own music and I have always been a huge fan of EDM. As I began to pivot from my hip hop background I discovered that I really enjoyed writing this style of music and I believe I have found my calling. 2024 was a year of solid releases with 5 singles which has helped me build momentum for 2025. Currently I am working on a new project and focusing on playing more shows as an independent artist.
How would you describe your sound? Why do you think fans resonate with your music?
An eclectic blend of deep house and trance. I draw alot of inspiration from various genres which I think adds a unique element to my sound that catches my listeners attention. The songs I decide to release always have a strong emotional force behind them and I think my fans connect with that.
Which artist’s music and/or performance, past or present, inspires you today?
KREAM. I love their music. they utilise some great production techniques and they have a talent for writing songs that take me on a journey. Music is meant to make us feel things and KREAM always deliver. Also their live performances look sick and I’d love to see them on stage.
Your latest single ‘Oceans’ has just been released! What’s it all about? Describe its origin and evolution.
Oceans is an anthemic deep house track that I wrote for the summertime. I had worked on it for about half a year before I decided it was ready for release, going through different iterations of the track slowly working my way towards the finished result. I wanted to capture the feelings of freedom, euphoria, summertime and the ocean. It is a song to wash away your worries and bring a surge of free spirited joy throughout your soul. At its heart it is a simple song that encourages you to let go.
Is there an EP or Album on the drawing board?
Most definitely! Midyear I plan to release an EP
What tours and events are coming up? What are you looking forward to, and what can the fans expect?
I am performing at WOMAD festival in March and am so excited that I can barely sleep! I m also travelling overseas later this year and am looking forward to finding some new venues to play in and finding new sources of inspiration for my music.
If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And why?
Daft Punk. They had a huge impact on me in my early teens and are a huge source of inspiration for me. I also want to wear a cool helmet hahahaha
.
.
What are your long-term aspirations as a music artist and how are you progressing towards them?
My goal is to play overseas in the next couple years and build a really strong audience of people who resonate with my music. My focus currently is working more on the PR side of things and doubling down on writing music that I feel I truly connect with, that way my listeners will be able to feel the intention and emotion behind each release. Building on this I am slowly trying to establish a network of venues interstate and in foreign countries in the hopes of booking shows and growing my audience that way. For me, I don’t care where I play because in my mind, every show helps take me one step closer towards my goal.
With that in mind, what piece of advice would you give to an artist starting out?
Understand that self doubt will be a battle we all need to fight at some stage in our career. Especially in regards to self promotion or releasing music that has an emotional connection to who we are. Being able to confront this head on and allowing ourselves to be vulnerable in order to grow will help further yourself as an artist more than you realise!
What is the best thing about performing to a live audience? What’s been the career highlight so far?
Feeding off the energy of the crowd for sure. Being able to connect with so many people at once without barriers is an incredible feeling. I’d say my career highlight has been hosting a couple boat parties. Dancing on a boat with friends and great music really makes you feel alive!
Here are three general questions your fans will find interesting about you:
What is the craziest thing you’ve ever done? Travelling solo. It really shows you who you are. also its really, really fun and exciting!
What is the one topic you can talk about for hours? Ancient history/Aliens/Space. I don’t think we’re alone in the universe and I struggle to believe that ancient civilizations were built without advanced technology. I love going down the rabbit hole.
What is the thing you like most about yourself? I think it would be my sense of humour. I try not to take life too seriously and I really enjoy making other people laugh. Life’s good if we’re all smiling!
