Have you always wanted to be a musician? When did you get the song writing bug?
I always loved to sing since i was little, writing began when i was about 15 but the certainty of wanting to do it as a career became more solid when i turned 18. I studied music at Tafe after school feeling a little lost with what to do, i loved it so much and i met some incredible people who really encouraged me to step out of my bedroom and perform my songs live, i started gigging around and busking. I eventually crossed paths with a lady by the name of Fleur Mcmenamin who managed me for 4 years and truly changed my life in the best possible way, i guess it all went from there!

How would you describe your sound? Why do you think people resonate with your music?
I guess my sound is always changing across the releases, but my lyrical approach still stays the same. I like to write honestly, from personal experience with the occasional elaboration or idealistic outlook – it’s story telling with big elements of truth. I think people relate to honesty, to things that are universal. Love, heartbreak, anxieties and worries, connection.

Which artist’s music and/or performance, past or present, inspires you today?
Oh i always find this so hard, i feel like i’m inspired by a lot, all the time! Everyday there’s new music on the radio, new sounds, new approaches, it’s constantly inspiring. I really love Missy Higgins, and always have. Lisa mitchell was probably the first artist i saw and felt connected to and thought to myself “I’m gonna start writing songs, and i want to be as great as her!” I was about 15 i’d say, watching Australian idol, haha!

Your new single has just been released/is about to be released! Describe its origin and evolution.
I wrote this song with German born producer Tobias Kuhn. We were introduced through my publisher. We had 4 hours in a studio in Brisbane, we both went in with pretty much nothing except Tobias had this cool little beat and i just started singing some words. Eventually it turned into this song at the end of the 4 hours! We both got along really well which made it easier to be openly creative and comfortable. The lyrics i wrote on the day, having just left bigsound with someone i was falling for pretty hard i guess they just came about naturally.

Is there an EP or Album on the drawing board?
I would really love to record a new body of work, given these strange times we are in, i can’t make any promises of when this could happen, but if not this year then definitely next. As soon as i can get in a studio, i’ll be there! I’ve definitely got enough songs up my sleeves for a new release.

.

.

If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And why?
Jamie T, because he’s so coooooooool! Soko, because she’s so strange and also so COOL!  Probably be impossible to perform with either of them because i’d be passing out or crying from nerves. I’d love to do a duet with Missy Higgins too, i don’t know, there’s too many!

Do you have any long-term aspirations as a music artist?
I try to be smart with my approach and aim for a sustainable career. I guess the long-term goal is to be able to do music full-time comfortably, for as long as i can. I aim to have everything in place that i can to make that goal more and more achievable. I’m definitely getting closer!
I anticipate to constantly be working on new music, new releases, new projects. To grow and evolve without losing myself in the process. To maintain the beautiful professional relationships i already have and to keep creating more along the way. You need a team in this industry, and i have a pretty great one!

What is the best thing about performing to a live audience? What’s been the career highlight so far?
To see people connect with what you’re singing/saying. As bad as it sounds maybe some of the highlights are when people are crying in the front row, i don’t know, it just makes me feel like i’ve really struck a chord and made someone feel less alone with something, or helped them in some strange way. I cry to music that helps me so i’m just going off that. A highlight last year was selling out a run of shows on my tour, that was really special and cool!!

GRETA STANLEY
returns with bright new single
‘SOAK INTO THIS’

Signalling her triumphant return for 2020, Far North Queensland’s Greta Stanley announces her new single, ‘Soak Into This’ released March 24th via Double Drummer. Blending a new indie-rock influence and smart pop overtones with her folkier roots, it’s her most immediate and engaging song yet.

‘Soak Into This’ marks a vibrant new kick off point for Stanley, who is coming off the back of three QMA nominations, a sold out headline tour and support runs with both Emma Louise and Newton Falkner. She is now staring down the barrel at a brand new year of music, live performance and a new album.

Following on from the release of 2019 EP Sun In My Eyes (which featured the popular tracks ‘Kick’, ‘Come Undone’ and ‘Pour’, the latter of which is about to hit 1 million streams), ‘Soak Into This’ is a striking continuation of Greta’s songwriting development and skill.

Co-written and produced by German heavy-hitter Tobias Kuhn (Milky Chance, Alec Benjamin, Dean Lewis), ‘Soak Into This’ had a dream team bringing it to life, with Matthew Neighbour (Courtney Barnett, Matt Corby) mixing and Matt Agoglia (Cage The Elephant, Spoon) mastering. “Tobias was so friendly and hilarious – we had an instant connection with our love of music. It felt like working with a friend and therefore, everything felt so natural.” Greta Stanley

A song built on new connections, ‘Soak Into This’ beckons the listener to let go and immerse themselves into the music. “It’s about having fun and the exciting feeling you get when you enter a new relationship, whether it’s romantic or a friendship. I wrote it thinking about all the fun I’d been having in my new relationship, the nights out with friends, festivals…but then the slow and more intense moments [are] where you really feel something growing.” Greta Stanley
