How did HeyHolly come together? Is there someone who is a “driving force”, or do you all make decisions together?
We have been friends since year 6, we are 25 years of age now so we guess through growing up together and sharing a passion for music it led us straight to HeyHolly. Behind the scenes we were always putting in work writing music on our own. it wasn’t until august of 2021 when we both found ourselves in strange places in our life. We needed something to turn to and a creative outlet. It was such a clear direction for us that we both needed so we decided to form HeyHolly.
It all took off pretty fast in terms of the work we were putting in since our first studio session with our producer Jethro and there are absolutely no plans of looking back. HeyHolly is a team. there is no superior role or decision maker. you couldn’t have one of us without the other and everything we do we do we will continue to do together. Sometimes it can get heated when it comes to studio sessions and we will argue like a sweet old married couple but we always manage to make it work and those tense moments often lead to something magical.
How would you describe your sound? Why do you think people resonate with your music?
For us, our sound so far is just straight forward Pop/Hip Hop. We have had multiple conversations about the type of music we want to be making and as cruise has said it best “we don’t want to be put in a genre box” We love to get experimental but also know we don’t want to stray too far from the original goal of making rap music. Having an idea and taking that to the studio sometimes works and sometimes it doesn’t, if it works you’ll hear it from us.
We think our music resonates with people because it tends to be something that might sound familiar while still maintaining our own style. Pop music is catchy and contagious and we think we have managed to pull that off quite nicely. As far as our lyrics, they all come from personal places within yourself. People go through the ups and downs in life and the push and pull of the world around us, We love to include all of that in our music. If you are going through a heartbreak then listen to HeyHolly. If you are having a day drinking session then listen to HeyHolly. Whatever it is you are doing, we will create something for those moments.
Which artist’s music and/or performance, past or present, inspires you today?
Bryce: There are so many to choose from but I’ll narrow it down to 2. Sticky Fingers live at the Hordern Pavilion and Bring Me The Horizon live at Royal Albert Hall. I won’t bang on too much about why, all i’ll say is watch for yourself.
Cruise: Seeing Matt Corby live at thebarton theatre for his telluric tour was definitely a stand out moment for myself. When I’m not at live gigs I resort to mac miller’s 2018 lollapalooza chile concert.
Your new single ‘Vinyl’ has just been released! Describe its origin and evolution.
Vinyl started with a youtube type beat and an idea for a music video before anything else. Cruise pictured a young man digging for Lps in his local record store when a girl walks in and he sees her reflection through a clear Vinyl and is taken back by her beauty. It’s a love story. Bryce’s lyrics were heavily inspired by his own ups and downs with love while still trying to paint a picture of a couple who may have only just met. Your world turns upside down when you are in that honeymoon period but it doesn’t always work out the way you both originally intended. The hook is simple and effective and that is exactly what we were going for. It’s repetitive for a reason, we wanted it to be stuck in peoples heads real early on. We took that hook to Jethro and it all just came so naturally from there.
Is there an EP or Album on the drawing board?
The short answer is Yes. So far we have a bunch of singles that we will be releasing through the year. One after another, we are so excited for people to hear them As far as the singles go you can expect them to be pretty pop orientated with some nice bars. We want to be consistent with what we have done with RWS and Vinyl for the moment. As far as the EP goes we have settled on the sound around it and the overall theme. It will be different from anything you have heard from HeyHolly. We are putting no pressure on the EP right now but we do have a couple tracks ready to go that we are so proud of.

Any tours or events coming up soon? What are you looking forward to, and what can the fans expect?
So far there are no shows or tours in the works. We have had conversations around playing some shows between the two of us and some mates in the scene but at this point we are heavily focused on our studio work. Those live shows for us will be perfect and everything we have ever wanted but we need to put in the work to get there. It will happen when there is no doubt in our mind that we are ready. Just expect plenty of music from us and expect to see us at every show in Adelaide and have a beer with us. We want to support whatever we can going on around us in the creative arts world when it needs everyone the most. Come see us at your local gigs and support some amazing artists by buying tickets/Merch and just being there.
How has COVID affected you to date? What have you introduced to balance the losses from missed events?
Being a new artist it hasn’t affected us too much. We both miss festivals and seeing international and even our favourite Aus artist in our city but I’m sure in good time that will hopefully all come around. Bryce caught covid real recently and that pushed back our studio time for the moment but it’s nothing we can’t bounce back from. I guess the number one thing we want to take away from all of this and spread the message of. Buy local and support local everything. Support local business and support local artists. Your favourite bands were all local at some point so why not be a part of the come up of the next greatest thing.
If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And why?
Bryce: Now that’s a hard question. Right now I’d love to work with any of the lads in sticky fingers. They are so classic to me and I’ve been there since the come up for them. I know how much they support smaller artists and the community around them, it’s inspiring.
Cruise: i’d love to perform with logic, that would be crazy. His energy on stage is unmatched and his knowledge on music and pop culture is wild. I feel like we could really learn a lot from him and connect on so many levels.
Do you have any long-term aspirations as a music artist?
To keep being us. This is the start of HeyHolly and there is so much more to come. We just want to keep writing music that we love. We would love to crack the international scene in the states and Europe to put Australia on the map. I think there is so much unheard talent here and we would love to bridge that gap. For now we don’t have too many expectations, one step at a time. No point being caught up in what may or may not be ahead of us, the best place to be is the present and take it all in.
What is the best thing about performing to a live audience? What’s been the career highlight so far?
For us just having music out in the world forever has been a blessing. When everything is all said and done and we leave this earth at least we have left a legacy. Art to be enjoyed hopefully for years after our time. We have made so many new friends so far and that’s one of the most special things about all of it.
