Holly Alison

Hailing from the coastal suburbs of Northern NSW, Holly Alison is the new kid on the block.

Holly originally gained popularity on social media from her viral covers clocking up over 800k views, it was the original releases that followed that further solidified Holly Alison as one of the countries most exciting new pop artists. With original tunes ‘Give Me Your Heart’ receiving airtime on Triple J & metro station SeaFM while massing over 100k streams, and ‘Come Here’ charting at #1 on triple j unearthed charts.

‘Balance Beam’ comes off the back of Holly cracking in excess of 100k streams on Spotify, and if the vibrant new sonics weren’t enough, the song is accompanied by some neon-lit visuals to match, which you can see below. Matea Jozic caught up with Holly recently for a chat.

Holly Alison…. How did you first get into music? How did your career first begin?

I started playing guitar young and then went on to incorporate singing. Wasn’t sure about my singing to begin with haha (and neither was my family) though I stuck with it and put in the hard yards and it’s all come together. Now my family doesn’t mind it ;)

.

Not only are you a singer/songwriter, but, you’re also a rising athlete, how do you find the balance between your sporting life and your musical one?

Every second that I’m not doing sport, I’m doing my music and every second I am not doing music, I am doing sport or work which is PE teaching, so sport haha. My sport mates get a bit over me plugging myself at all training sessions but that’s cool, I just roll with it haha. I literally come up with songs in my car going back and forth between the two, recording voice memos and then when I have spare time at home I record demos ready to be produced.

.

You’ve got a new track that’s just dropped, ‘Balance Beam’ featuring Sydney legend AIRPORTS, how did you feel about the release of that?

I’m stoked! This was ready to go for a while, so really happy with it and looking forward to hearing people’s responses to it. It’s something that’s super relatable and I am that bloody keen now it is out for the world’s ears.

.

.

What was it like working with AIRPORTS in the studio? Have you guys worked together before?

We’ve worked together previously as he produces all my stuff but we havn’t worked specifically on a song together lyrically/melody wise. For this, I was originally thinking that I would maybe have a rapper in the second verse. I contacted a few really cool rappers to see if they were keen including; Poppy Rose, Carmouflage Rose, writing this now I see I must’ve been keen on the whole ROSE vibe haha. They were super busy with other releases and rightfully so. I then showed my producer Aaron Lee aka AIRPORTS who was frothing the feels of the message at the time and so he wrote his verse. It worked out really well in the end and he is a legend. I love working with him as he is a massive talent.

.

‘Give Me Your Heart’ really changed things for you last year, what’s different in your life right now compared to 12 months ago?

Now I feel like I’m juggling a lot more, haha, as I feel a little more pressure to release something decent. Even though I’m loving it, I’ve definitely noticed that my fan base grew over the past 12 months and there is more of an expectation there. I’ve also gained more insight into the music industry since then. I feel I’m a lot more confident in my direction these days and am more keen than ever to create and release my music.

.

Where do you envision yourself to be 12 months from now?

Honestly, I would love to be touring a heap! Not only National tours but International tours. I just love the feeling of being on stage and performing songs that people can really relate to.

If you could pick absolutely anyone to bring on tour with you, who would you pick? (Dead or alive.)

Honestly? I would bring my mum because I get mad anxiety at times, and the partner if I was bringing someone to sing or perform with me. I wouldn’t mind having Blackbear there as I looooooove his songs, lyrics, melodies and beats. I also wouldn’t mind having Marshmellow there for a bit of hype hahaha.

.

How do you see your sound progressing in the future? Who are your inspirations?

I get most of my inspiration from Blackbear, Khalid and Chainsmokers. I like to find a happy medium between some boss ass beats and some super emotional lyrics and melodies with a siiiick drop. So if you can combine all of that into a song then that’s kind of the future of my music progression haha.

.

What kind of music did you grow up on?

I remember dancing around in the lounge room to some super slick old school tunes that mum and dad used to put on. Like the B-52s, Spice Girls, No Doubt, Savage Garden, Smash Mouth, The Beatles and Shania Twain. There was also this “Apple Eyes” song by Swoop and if you don’t know it you seriously need to check it out, its that good!!!! haha
