You started out over a decade ago now! How would you describe the music you write now? How has your sound evolved over the past decade?
We constantly making records for ourselves and other artists… which keeps us in the mix of where music is going, instead of where it’s been. I’ve ended up producing the majority of our latest records, and we’ve branched out a lot into sounds that are far from how we sounded 10 years ago. But no matter what we still have the energy that makes us who we are, and has always connected us with our listeners.
You recently released new single, “Do The Damn Thing” with Chord Overstreet feat. Levi. What led you to work with Chord Overstreet and Levi on the track?
Yes! Chord is my brother, and I’ve know Levi since he was probably 4 years old. So it’s really all in the family with this record. We originally wrote the song with Ryan, Jamie, Chord and myself, and we called Levi to come through and drop his verse after we’d finished it up.
It nods to some 60’s soul/R&B while hitting a hype Hugh energy beat in the first chorus that makes us wanna just go off!
What did the process of collaborating on the single look like? Did you make it in lockdown?
We made it in the middle of lockdown, which is a bit weird to think about… but we have had so many house party’s with Chord, Levi and us, that it was easy to write about cramming a couple hundred into a house in the hills and raging til 6am.
Also, having been in lockdown for the last year, we definitely drank our faces off a lot. So just because the guest list went down to the 5 of us, doesn’t mean it didn’t get wild.
What do you hope fans will take away from the single? What does the single mean to you?
I can’t wait to hear people saying this became their “getting ready”/pre-game anthem. It’s so dope when we see videos of a group of friends blasting our songs while we drive around or make up dances etc.
We always wanna put our fans in the best mood they’ve been in all day.
You just released a music video for “Come My Way” in time for National Adopt a Shelter Pet Day! What inspired you to make the video in time for the special day?
We were talking about what to do for the video, and we love animals… and whether or not your dog obeys, “Come My Way” fit the idea of having a ton of rescue puppies star in the video with us. It feels great to use our music videos to spread more than just our music!
.
.
Were you tempted to adopt any of the dogs while you were recording the video?
Two of them belong to Ryan, and the rest had already been rescued, so I bet their owners would be bummed if we’d stolen a couple haha. We stayed away from using dogs that still needed to be rescued since putting them in a music video setting could end up traumatic in that stage.
You have been active on TikTok for a little while now, what prompted you to start making TikToks? What kind of TikToks are you guys making?
We’ve always been suckers for social media, and tiktok has been such a fun way to reach fans that may not have already followed our Instagram or Twitter. It’s an amazing community that’s really been supportive of us getting back together.
What impact would you say TikTok has had on popular music and the discovery of music artists? Do you think there has been a shift with the growing number of TikTok music artists making it big?
It’s changed the entire industry! People are now in charge of what things and music react and resonate with them. Anything can go viral and magically become a success out of nowhere. It’s the Wild West but very exciting for new music.
What is next for you in 2021? Do you have any plans for live performances this year?
We are currently figuring out how to go back into touring as the world re-opens. We can’t wait to travel and see as many people in as many places as possible. It’s definitely one of the best parts of the job. We had to cancel our 2020 tour 3 days before we were gonna get on the bus!
What can fans expect at a live Hot Chelle Rae gig?
A bunch of new music and vibes, and every favorite you’ve got from the last 10+ years we’ve dropped music. We always find ways to freshen up old songs and make the stage layout get fun and weird.

.
For people who have been fans of you for a long time, maybe even since the beginning of Hot Chelle Rae, what is one thing people might be surprised to know about you?
We never had a falling out. When we broke up for 5 years, we still hung out and wrote songs all the time. We took vacations and trips together. We only stopped to get out from under some red tape that can sadly go along with contacts and bigger companies sometimes in the industry.
Who are your biggest music influences? How have they had an impact on you as individuals, and the music you write?
They’ve changed over the years. Old school influences are anything from Prince to The Beatles and Queen. But as soon as we hear a new crazy song from one of these last few years newer artists, we get re-inspired all over again to hit the studio, and experiment with breaking our own rules and make something cool and new.
If you could get any music lyrics tattooed on your body, what lyrics would you choose, and why? Where would they be on your body?
Hmmmm, the next worldwide smash we have… I don’t care what it is… I’d be down to get the title in between a couple tattoos on my right arm. Or maybe a giant one of the single artwork across my butt!
Where do you see yourselves in five years’ time? Do you have long-term dreams or goals you have yet to achieve as musicians?
We’re hyped to be back, and get into the momentum of touring and having covid done with. I’d love to be having hit after hit 5 years from now… and rent some giant beach house to record our millionth album haha.
