HP BOYZ are an independent Australian Hip Hop group from Melbourne. The band comprises of: YJ, Mways and Onit. They started off as close friends in the early stages of their life and went on to become a brotherhood in their early teens. Music followed soon after and became their main creative outlet and a huge inspiration for the boys. They’ve achieved significant success in a short amount of time, only being in the game for over a year.
Having amassed over 150 Million streams across their platforms as well as Platinum and Gold singles, HP BOYZ go from strength-to-strength with each release. They list their influences including: Tion Wayne, Sheff G, and Lil Tjay just to name a few. HP BOYZ Sold Out their 7 Date New Zealand Tour in 2019, in less than 10 minutes. The boys also took home the People’s Choice award for the first time at the ‘Pacific Music Awards’ but because of COVID-19 travel restrictions they couldn’t be in New Zealand for the awards, so accepted it from their house in Melbourne.

How did you find each other and decie to share your musical talents as a group?
YJ – We grew up together and we went school together i remember when mways moved in hp we use to kick back at a spot right in front of his house coral park where we yous to have party n do whole lotta shit when we were young we kept trynna drag mways to come kick it with us mind you we would stay at this spot all night didnt know when to go home it was the spot for the boys alota shit went down there we all knew some of us could rap just cos we were into that hip hop scene graffiti tagging adlay styles aus grime but we would rap for each other mainly us 3 an some of the other boys then we would go home all of a sudden we come back with new raps every weekend thats where it started then we decided to start making tracks for the weekend we’d look foward to rapping raps an linking up with the crew wed make demos with pj and then we got introduced to mways brother area beats we were recording for fun it was for our weekends then we decided to start making proper songs an put them out we had a litlle vision but we ended turning that vision even bigger now where just comfortable dropping songs for everyone.
ONIT – We all Grew up together since young. And Like most people from our area/background, Music has always been a big part of our lives.
MWAYS – We’ve known each other for a while, but there was a primary school we all use to hang out at in Hampton park, Coral park primary, I think it was from there we just gained a lot of confidence to step out and take music serious.
How would you describe your sound? Why do you think fans resonate with your music
YJ – Our sound is diffrent from everyone else we have our own styles of rapping just cos of music influences and the people we are were all diffrent but we can relate to most things cos we came up together.
ONIT – I feel like people fuck with our music because Our sound is unique and original.
MWAYS – I wouldn’t know how to describe our sound but I would say we different because each of us are inspired by different artists, we all have a different style from one another but I think we compliment each other well when we come together.
Which artist’s music and/or performance, past or present, inspires you today?
ONIT – Too many to mention, but off the top of my head. Burna Boy & Stormzy performance at the BRITs has to be the most inspiring for me.
MWAYS – Notorious BIG, I just fuck with his flow, his style and just how he says things, looks are not everything but smooth with the words.
.
.
Your most latest release was ‘Rumours’. Describe its origin and evolution.
ONIT – Rumours was a big stepping stone for us, we took a leap of faith going all out with our video which was a massive success as it went number 1 trending and is still doing solid numbers now.
MWAYS – Well you know growing up, your always going to run into rumours, if its about you or not, making hip hop music in Australia, everyone ones going to have questions about you or say things about you, just never let it phase you and just keep doing you.
Is there an EP or Album on the drawing board?
YJ – Hundred percent in the works probably drop one soon still.
ONIT – For the future, yes there is of course there is. im sure everyone does. But right now, we’ve got our moves set for the next 6-12 months its inevitable an album will follow.
MWAYS – Hundred percent album is something we have been talking about but just doing singles at the moment.
.
.
You will be touring around the country in May, what are you looking forward to, and what can the fans expect?
YJ – Tours coming up exited to get back out there perform for our real crowds and also new people thats getting on to our music just keen to perform an having making memorys with the crowd. fans can expect new songs n more just have to wait an see.
ONIT – Just looking forward to be in the same room as our fans, and give them a good performance.
MWAYS – Yeah we’ve been looking forward to this tour, I’m looking forward to going to cairns and Darwin, cause I’ve never been before, and for the fans, turn up and will turn up to, lets party!
If you could perform with any music artist,Alive or Dead, who would you choose and why?
YJ – Headie one and skepta I’ve been listening to headie and skepta back in my lasts years of school those 2. I looked up to back then I watched them till now straight big diffrence making propper moves would be a mad link up with those artist.
ONIT – Has to be Drake, idk why but he’s the 6 god lol.
MWAYS – Wouldn’t say I have one now but if whatever I do in the music, inspires someone else to do music, or inspire them to do anything they want to do then I could never complain about that.
.
.
Do you have any long term aspirations as a music artist?
YJ – Will see only time will tell but i wanna do this for a while only the begining.
ONIT – Right now yes, I do have long term aspirations. Music will always be in me no matter where I go or what im doing.
What is the best thing about performing to a live audience? What’s been the career highlight so far?
YJ – The hype an the energy in the room an when people know your lyrics word for word is crazy hearing the crowd highlight my carrer traveling an touring places and also recieving plaques for our songs.
ONIT – Career highlight so far, im not sure there’s too many to mention. Maybe dropping the EP 6 to the world. I think thats our biggest highlight. Proud of the boys.
MWAYS – I think the best thing is just coming out on stage and watching the crowd rap your words, word for word with you, gives a different type of adrenaline.
