Have you always wanted to be a musician? When did you get the song-writing bug?
Yeah definitely! As long as I can remember, that’s been the only thing I’ve ever wanted to do. My Mum always used to sing around us as kids and it became something that meant a lot to me, so definitely always been there for me.

How would you describe your sound? Why do you think fans resonate with your Music?
I always talk about vulnerability when it comes to my music. I really try to write from a place of vulnerability and honesty and I hope that’s the thing that shines through and resonates with people.

Which artist’s music and/or performance, past or present, inspires you today?
I say it all the time but it’d have to be Jeff Buckley. I think he does so well what I try to do with my music. That vulnerability and honesty really shines through with him and that’s definitely something I try to emulate in my own way. He’s definitely been a favourite for a long time and someone that I’ve taken a lot of inspiration from throughout.

Your new EP is about to be released! Describe its origin and evolution.
The idea for freeway flowers came as an ode to a lesson that my Mum instilled in me growing up, that no matter the circumstance, something will grow – like flowers through cracks in concrete on a freeway. I took a whole bunch of stories from my recent life that I applied that outlook on and the project was born.

What are the signature tracks, and which is your favorite?
That’s a tough one for sure haha. I think it’d have to be either this last song coming up ‘lovers’ or ‘forced my hand’. I love both so much and love how different they both are. ‘lovers’ is a new side of me for sure and I can’t wait for people to get their ears around it. It was such a fun process and like I’ve said, felt like total music freedom creating these songs.

Any tours or events coming up soon? What are you looking forward to, and what can the fans expect?
Yeah definitely! I’m playing in Sydney on November 1st then I’ve got two tour dates in La on November 10th and in San Fran on November 12th supporting JUNNY which I’m insanely excited about. I’ve been a huge fan of his for a while now so I can’t wait for those. But hitting the ground running in the new year on the live front which I couldn’t be more pumped about so definitely lots coming.

If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And why?
Probably Silk Sonic or something like that. I don’t know, those shows just always look like they’re all having so much fun and I think that’s what music is all about. So it’d definitely have to be them.

.

.

What are your long-term aspirations as a music artist and how are you progressing towards them?
I just want to connect with a bigger audience and bring them into this world that I’m creating. I think at its core that’s always my goal. I feel like that’s been a huge learning curve for my own music. Just remembering why I started doing it and what music is to me. It’s always been about creating something that others can connect to and that’ll always be the goal for me.

With that in mind, what piece of advice would you give to an artist starting out?
Like I said, remembering why you began is such a big thing that helps me and something I think all creatives should lean on. There are so many different little pieces to it now that it can be hard to know what’s what. But maintaining that love for your craft is the key and everything else follows that.

Press Release 25th October 2024 (below)

HUGO
completes the
FREEWAY FLOWERS EP
journey releasing
‘LOVERS’

the final single from the project

.

Hugo Basclain.

Hugo co-wrote ‘lovers’ with The Gifted and within a matter of just a few hours, the essence of ‘lovers’ had crystallised, with the song seemingly writing itself.

Speaking on the track, Hugo states that “‘lovers’ emerged from the emotional aftermath of a breakup, a period where life can feel muted and less vibrant. This sentiment of post-breakup malaise is a universally relatable emotion, and it provided the fertile ground upon which the song was created.”

The official video for ‘lovers’ drops at 5:00pm (AEDT) today!

freeway flowers is a captivating EP that delves into the multifaceted journey of love, betrayal, and self-discovery. Through poignant storytelling, it navigates themes of heartbreak. Listeners are taken on a profound exploration of coming-of-age moments, where innocence collides with harsh realities, painting a vivid portrait of raw emotions and vulnerability. Showing us that even in the worst conditions, flowers can still grow through the concrete.

Hugo is performing a special one-off show at Joelene’s in Sydney on Fri 1st November.
