Congrats on your debut single, Ooh La La La!
Thank you. Honestly, I really appreciate that. It’s been nerve wracking putting it out. Hearing that is great. Thank you!

Let’s delve into your songwriting process. Can you tell me about the creative inspiration behind the song?
Ooh La La La was actually supposed to be my song if I were to win Australian Idol. It got given to me because every person who makes it to the top six have to record a winner’s single, because there’s not really much time. The process is pretty quick. So, if I were to progress and win – the song is what would have come out, straight off the bat. As soon as I heard the song that Anthony Egizii and David Musumeci wrote together and produced, I was in love with it. As soon as I sang on it, I knew I needed this song so badly.

How do you think your journey has changed since Australian Idol to now?
It’s been such a big leap. Before Australian Idol, I was doing ballad songs, whereas, when I went on the show, I kind of got pushed to do more dance, poppy music. I thought okay, I’ll take it on. I’ll try it. As soon as I performed my first performance, Remember by Becky Hill to get into the top 12, I fell in love with every single part of the performance, the way it sounded, the way I felt when I was performing it. I think that’s what really changed my direction in music. After that, I knew pop dance was the avenue I wanted to go down.

Do you feel your confidence levels have changed because of the genre switch?
Honestly, I feel more nervous singing a pop dance song than a ballad. For me personally, a ballad can be so powerful, just standing there and singing straight from the heart. But a song that’s so upbeat and poppy, you need to move around and I have uncoordinated movements. When I had to try and work it out, I would think about singing where I’m standing, and what I’m actually doing on the stage. I think that all kind of came at once, but now it’s definitely a lot easier for me to feel a little bit more comfortable with it. I love performing it and once I start, the nerves just kind of go away.

Do you have a performance pre-ritual that you do before a show that helps you feel settled?
I actually do. It’s so odd because it only happened because I lost my voice.
I lost my voice during top 30 week of Idol. So, I would get lozenges. Now before every performance, I need to have a lozenge, even when I’m not sick. Then I feel ready to perform.

Why do you think fans are able to resonate with your music?
I think because it’s just so fun, loving and upbeat. It kind of caters to everyone. I think everyone can enjoy it because it kind of puts people in a good mood, or it makes you feel a little bit better. That’s what’s really special about it.

For new fans who will come across your music, what message do you want them to understand about you as an artist and your work?
That I’m just myself. That’s the biggest thing. If I don’t want to do something, I’m not going to do it. With my music, I’m not going to just stick to one thing. I’m going to stay in pop, but that doesn’t mean I’m going to stop and hold back from doing a stripped-back ballad version of a song. I think, it’s really important as a person and as an artist that you’re seeing the real authentic me and I’m not trying to be someone else. That’s the main message. With my music, I just want people to connect with it and find joy from it and just be happy and be dancing.

What best piece of advice have you received as an artist?
The best advice that I have gotten is don’t wait, just do it. It’s important that if you’ve got a song that you love or you’ve got something that you love or if I’m not sure if I should post that because I’m scared of what someone else thinks. Don’t worry about that. If you want to do it, just do it.

Do you have a dream collaboration?
Calvin Harris. I think Calvin Harris and Rihanna together is unreal. It’s so good. Let’s bring it back.

Favourites?
Album: Loud, Rhianna
Artist: Rihanna
Movie: 10 Things I Hate About You
Song: Señorita, Justin Timberlake
