Melbourne based artist Izzy Day is an alternative soul singer-songwriter and producer. She released her latest single, ‘Silence’ on the 28th of April.

Within dynamically layered music productions, Izzy intertwines rich, distinctive vocals, luscious soulful textures and punchy beats, leaving listeners captivated and inspired to the core. Izzy’s endearing and honest nature echoes throughout her songs, with lyrics that reflect her own journey in the moment it unfolds. The songstress weaves retrospective stories of life in all of its complexities against a backdrop of ambient alternative soul.

Her new single, ‘Silence’ is a dreamy exposition that relays vulnerable challenging moments along the journey of love. Its melodic vibe carries you through, unmasking a paradox of emotions, between feelings of disconnection and deep longing.

2020 saw the release of Izzy’s debut single, ‘Motions,’ created alongside electro hip-hop producers, munkyds. The release received praise from press, airplay and a live interview with ABC Gold Coast radio as well as a sold out headliner show in her home state last year.

Izzy has been active as a live singer-songwriter and bandleader since 2013, playing many shows and festivals along the east coast. Including iconic venues such as The Great Northern and The Beach Hotel in Byron Bay and festivals such as Bleach Festival, Byron Bay Blues Festival, Festival 18, Celebrate GC festival and the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Supports include artists such as Vinnie LaDuce, Brave Gulf, feeding fauna and Daisy Brains to name a few.

With this release, Izzy aims to create waves within her new hometown, ‘Silence’ being a promising sign of what’s to come.

Have you always wanted to be a musician? When did you start writing music?
I began singing from the age of 4 and from the get go I was in love with how it made me feel. At that age I think my soul knew before I did. When I was 14 I started playing guitar and wrote my first song and haven’t really stopped since.

Which music did you grow up listening to? How has it influenced your current style?
Growing up with a multi-instrumentalist father, I was lucky to be exposed to a whole range of music genres from an early age, from folk, soul, pop, indie, R&B and hip-hop. As a vocalist I was very influenced by female powerhouses Amy Winehouse, Adele and Joni Mitchell to name a few. Later on in life my writing style and muscality was influenced by artists like Dustin Tebbutt and Jarryd James and in more recent years Gaidaa, Jordan Rakei and Nai Palm.
I grew up with a lot of “heart on your sleeve” kind of music and I think that influenced me alot as an artist and as a person. The more my music comes from a space of vulnerability, the more I feel like myself.

How would you describe your sound? Why do you think people resonate with your music?
I would describe my sound as alternative soul and ambient folk. I love to create music that blends soulful textures, punchy beats, dynamic vocals along with a whole lot of harmonies.
Music for me has always been a platform to connect with the deeper parts of myself and a way of expressing life in all of its complexities, so maybe the realness of my songs and the opportunity to feel is what people are drawn to.

Your new single ‘Silence’ has just been released! Describe its origin and evolution.
From the beginning, the writing and recording process for ‘Silence’ felt very effortless and as the song evolved, producers the munkyds and I really nurtured the heart of the song. After working remotely with the munkyds for a couple of years already, ‘Silence’ was actually the first song we created together in the same room! The song stemmed from some open guitar chords I’d been playing for a while, mixed with melodic guitar riffs and harmonies that became the foundation of it’s ambient vibe. The munkyds then added a very chill hip-hop beat with an 808 bass that really carries you through the entirety of the song. Luke and I then worked on the lyrics which express a paradox of emotions, between feelings of disconnection and deep longing whilst being in love. I laid my vocals and a whole lot of harmonies and voilà, ‘Silence’ was created.

Do you have any more new music or videos in the works?
Yes! There is an official film clip for ‘Silence’ out on Thursday 13 May which was created by the incredible team at Drishti Studio and features dancer Kirilly Dawn. As for new releases I have many more creations in the making and aim to have my next release out this July!

What is the best thing about performing to a live audience?
So many things but nothing beats the feeling of connection and community with my audiences. It can be the most daunting but liberating experience at the same time. There is absolutely nothing like it!

If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And why?
That’s a very hard question! I would have to choose Alicia Keys. I really admire her as an artist, producer and a human.
