Have you always wanted to be a musician? When did you start writing music?
When I was about 15 years old, I became really interested in learning the guitar. I would often harass my parents about wanting to learn an instrument and on that Christmas, they bought me a guitar. It wasn’t until I was 17 that I started trying to write music.
Which music did you grow up listening to? How has it influenced your current style?
I was really into Linkin Park, Bullet for my valentine, story of the year in my early teens but in my early 20’s, I really got into Coldplay, Lauv, Dean Lewis, Ed Sheeran and Bastille. Lauv really influenced my current style, watching his stories on Instagram showed me that I need to do what I want to be happy. Also a chat with Dean Lewis years ago helped me make the decision.
How would you describe your sound?
When trying to create my sound I wanted to merge acoustic pop melody with electronic sounds and drops. I have always been a fan of tracks with a good drop.
Why do you think people resonate with your music?
I feel most people have a hard time through a relationship at some point, a lot of my music is focused around those experiences I’ve had.
Your new single ‘If Tomorrow Ever Comes’ has just been released! Describe its origin and evolution.
The vibe for the track grew from a melody idea I sent through on the day. Unfortunately I was actually 2-3 hours late to the session due to a family emergency but once I arrived I was able to get involved. The pre-chorus and chorus were already written by the time I arrived, so I only really had input in the first and second verse. I was really proud of my team that day as they did such a great job.
Do you have any more new music in the works?
I have a few little bits and pieces. But Covid has heavily affected my abilities to produce music, since losing my job I have no income to spend on producing my next tracks. I am working on something at the moment that will hopefully get me going and back in the studio.
.
.
Do you have any shows/tours coming up? What are you looking forward to, and what can the fans expect?
No shows are in the works as of yet, just going to let this Covid pandemic ease out but for now I will be focusing on building my audience.
If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And why?
Lauv, I love the way he writes his melodies and lyrics, his humour is weird super weird, just like mine too.
What’s next for you in the near future?
I have a couple more releases that I will be hopefully pumping out this year, I will be focusing on them for now.
What are your longer-term aspirations?
I’d love to make my music career my full time job, but it will require lots of hard work and dedication. Even if it’s just writing or producing, I’d love any aspect to be my job.
What is the best thing about performing to a live audience?
The way in which people interact with the songs you sing is unreal. The fact that people appreciate your music is the most rewarding part of being a musician.

JAMES SUN
releases new single
‘IF TOMORROW EVER COMES’
Listen HERE
James Sun has released his anticipated new single “If Tomorrow Ever Comes”, an electro pop gem that shimmers with a hybrid of sounds from acoustic pop melodies to cutting edge dance drops. The song explores the feeling of heartbreak and not being able to let go and move forward, feeling trapped with no escape from the way you feel.
The track was produced by Sydney based Liam Quinn who’s recently worked with Illy, Ruel, BOI and Guy Sebastian.
Speaking about his new single, James Sun says today, “The song was inspired by the experience of a break up and the feeling of not wanting to alone. When I first left high school, I would struggle a lot with break ups and the reality of having to walk separate ways. This would normally result in binge drinking and going out to try and move on. Sarah and Lisa were in the studio, writing with Liam for a good couple of hours before I even arrived, as I had a family emergency happen as I was on my way up to join them. They all really carried the momentum of this track and it was the first track where I haven’t been involved from the start.”
James Sun is one of Australia’s most promising new artists. His music has resonated with people around the globe, scoring over 2 million streams on Spotify in his first year on the platform, as well as receiving commercial radio play Australia wide.
As for his writing process, he usually writes the hook at home and then develops the melody in the studio citing artists such as Bastille, Ed Sheeran, Calvin Harris and LAUV as inspirations.
‘If Tomorrow Ever Comes’ is the first of many James Sun tunes and collaborations to be released in 2020.
‘If Tomorrow Ever Comes’ is out now through Ditto Music.
