Paul: Hey Jeff, thanks for chatting with me, how are you going?
Jeff: Yeah good man, it’s a little thunder-stormy in L.A right now, so I apologise if the thunder comes through, but thunder’s cool!

Paul: Well if you’re looking for good weather, you’re headed in the right direction in a month for UNDER THE SOUTHERN STARS. It’s a balmy thirty degrees Celsius here today and not a cloud in the sky, so hopefully it’ll hold up for a month, actually three weeks, it’s three weeks until you’re here in Australia right?
Jeff: Yeah, and I hear it takes three weeks to get there, so I better start making a move!

Paul: These Under the Southern Stars gigs have been postponed, then postponed again, are you excited to be finally getting out here?
Jeff: Yeah, it’s been a long road… I’ve never been to Australia, so it’s been a big thing for me to actually get there. The fact that my clothes have been there more than I have is kind of upsetting to me! We’ve had to send all our stuff over there, then bring it back a couple of times now. I just want to be able to get back and be a part of shows, whether it be watching them or singing at them, it feels like it’s something that was definitely missing for a while there, so I’m glad it’s coming back.

.

.

Paul: In America, you’ve had live gigs back for a little while, haven’t you?
Jeff: Yeah, it’s kind of been happening, I’ve been to a couple of shows and we’ve done a couple of weeks run here, just trying to get our feet underneath us and make sure we still remember how to do it! Ha-ha Having a couple of years off will make you wonder!

Paul: Well, we’re just starting to get our live music gigs back again NOW, so your timing is perfect and we can’t wait to see you. Does this mean you have to do more rehearsal then usual?
Jeff: We’re just about to start rehearsing actually. I just got back to L.A and Eric was out of town for a bit, so we’ll get together now and start hashing out some setlists and more than likely have more than one. I’m excited for it!

Paul: The rest of the band have been here, have they told you what to expect of Australia?
Jeff: No, I’m just going in wide-eyed and bushy-tailed! I’m excited, just trying to figure out where my days off are and I might get a bike and go ride around and check out some architecture and homegrown beers and who knows! I want to take it all in, I want the full Australian experience!

.

STONE TEMPLE PILOTS.

Paul: Our government deemed your travel of “National interest to Australia.” That’s gotta make you feel pretty special, right?
Jeff: hahaha Depends; is that good interest or bad interest? Nah, they’re looking out for us and making sure we don’t make any mistakes, but it’s a serious thing to get over there and we really want to try and give some hope back to people. Life goes on and we can still do the things we love; we can still participate and do all those things. There’s more tools and things that are available to people now than when the pandemic started, so it wouldn’t have felt right to do it before anyway, so now everyone can keep safe and there’s enough information out there to help people get through it and make sure everyone around them is taken care of too.

Paul: I feel like the fact that these are outdoor gigs brings a whole new element of great mental health for people too; being outside in the open air, do you like the outdoor gigs? Are they easier or harder than your usual indoor gigs?
Jeff: I love the outdoor gigs. When there’s a roof and walls, it can feel a little constricting. I play a lot of outdoor gigs and it just feels like you’re one with the sky and you’re doing more of a seance than a concert!

Paul: Now you’re playing alongside BUSH and Cheap Trick for this gig. You’ve played alongside BUSH before, haven’t you?
Jeff: Yeah, we’ve done some tours with Bush and they’re good dudes and there’s something to be said for the comradery between bands when you get along and it becomes more of a family vibe. My son actually came on tour and hung out and I remember Gavin (Rossdale; lead singer of Bush) taking our picture, he had it on the wall and I remember saying to him “You know who took that picture, don’t you, it was Gavin Rossdale and he was like “Who’s that!?!” Hahaha, he didn’t know who he was or what he did, he just knew him as a guy, it was a good moment. It was funny that we were out there touring with Bush and he had no idea what was going on!

.

.

Paul: So, for your shows at Under The Summer Stars, will you and Bush perform anything together, or are your sets completely separate?
Jeff: As far as I know it’ll all be separate. We kind of just flipflop, at least that’s the way we did it before when we were also with The Cult and this time we’ll be with Cheap Trick and I really can’t wait for that. When I found out they were going to be a part of it I started calling people back home who I grew up with and said “Hey guess who I’m playing shows with!” So that’ll be a really good moment for me too getting to see those guys every night.

Paul: Have you spoken to them?
Jeff: I have not spoken to them and I’m going to be fan-boying when I see them! I’ve heard they’re really cool guys and I’m looking forward to forming relationships with them and just being able to see them perform songs that I grew up on. I’m a fan!

Paul: I know the shows you were doing before Covid hit were acoustic shows. Are you planning on playing acoustically for these shows, or are you just going to rock them out?
Jeff: Well, we only have an hour, so I think we’re just going to try and fit as many songs in as we can. I think the acoustic thing is a different setting.

Paul: So, what have you got planned for after your visit to Australia?
Jeff: Well, we have another festival in Memphis, then one in California, but just getting it all in order, just getting back to it. I’ve been spending more time in Michigan, so I’ve gotta get back to L.A more and get back into the swing of things.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS

CHEAP TRICK

With over 5,000 performances spanning four decades, 20 million records sold worldwide, and inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Cheap Trick are undoubtedly one of the most influential classic rock groups of the past 50 years.

The band was formed in 1974 and while it has evolved throughout the years, Cheap Trick has continued to reach mainstream and critical success. Hits such as “I Want You To Want Me,” “Dream Police,” and “Surrender” have cemented the group as one of America’s top rock ‘n’ roll bands of all time.

In early 2021, Cheap Trick released their 20th studio album, In Another World to rave reviews!

BUSH

BUSH have been a mainstay on Australian radios since the release of their debut album Sixteen Stone in 1994. The album was an instant smash spending 43 weeks in the Australian Top 50, peaking at #5. Glycerine, Everything Zen and Comedown are in the DNA of Aussie rock fans and are played daily on the airwaves to this day.

While the 90’s belonged to BUSH, they were on hiatus between 2001 and 2011 when they returned with The Sea Of Memories featuring The Sound Of Winter . In 2019, BUSH came roaring back with the track Bullet Holes which is featured as the end title on the soundtrack to the Hollywood blockbuster John Wick 3 Parabellum.

STONE TEMPLE PILOTS

One of the biggest rock acts of the 1990’s with over 50 million albums sold, Stone Temple Pilots broke out of the scene they helped to define into bonafide superstars. From their breakout debut album, Core, with legendary hits, Sex Type Thing, Creep, and Plush to Purple’s soaring Interstate Love Song and Big Empty and the late 90’s smash singles Big Bang Baby and Sour Girl, STP songs are the soundtrack of a generation.

Stone Temple Pilots are reborn and writing the next chapter of their storied career, with their seventh studio album, Stone Temple Pilots (2018), their first with new lead singer, Jeff Gutt.

BLACK REBEL MOTORCYCLE CLUB

The ultimate road dogs, BRMC harness pure garage punk energy and mix in rolling riffs and dirge-laden rhythms to shake you to the core and make you want a cigarette afterwards.

Their self titled debut album turned 20 this year and for the past two decades through 9 studio albums, BRMC have been at forefront of the psych-indie rock resurgence.

Tracks like the anthemic Whatever Happened To My Rock N Roll, the latter day Beatlesque-like Spread Your Love and the hypnotic Beat The Devil’s Tattoo define a band that was made for the stage.
