In my latest chat for Amnplify, I had the pleasure of speaking with Jordan Dreyer, frontman of the post-hardcore band La Dispute. With nearly 20 years behind them, La Dispute has carved a distinct path in the music world. Our conversation covered everything from their beginnings in Michigan to their upcoming one-off show in Australia and the new album they’re planning to record down under.
The Early Days in Michigan
La Dispute’s journey began in their hometown of Grand Rapids, Michigan, with a simple yet profound connection. Jordan explained how he and drummer Brad are cousins who bonded over music while working summers at their parents’ hardware store. “We’d work together, talk about music, and decided we’d start playing together,” Jordan recalls. Despite having no musical training himself, Jordan’s love for punk rock and its ethos inspired him to become a vocalist, leading to the creation of La Dispute.
Reflecting on their early years, Jordan mentioned how they started playing small shows in their hometown while he was still in high school, not fully realizing that it would turn into a career that would span two decades.
Post-Hardcore Sound and Evolution
La Dispute is often labeled as post-hardcore, but Jordan was quick to admit the term’s ambiguity. “It’s the easiest, broadest signifier,” he said, noting that the label often encapsulates music that blends elements of punk and hardcore with more experimental and emotional nuances. La Dispute’s sound is known for its dynamic range, incorporating everything from frenetic guitar work to more subdued, emotional moments.

A Special Connection to Australia
Australia holds a special place in La Dispute’s heart. “We did shows in Australia before we ever traveled to Europe, which is pretty atypical for an American band,” Jordan shared. Their initial trip to Australia was made possible by a small Brisbane punk band called To The North, and despite the financial challenges, it was an experience that forged lasting friendships and built a strong bond with their Australian fan base.
Their upcoming show in Australia will celebrate the 10th anniversary of Rooms of the House, a fan-favorite album. Jordan described the performances they’ve done so far on this anniversary tour as “therapeutic” and “cathartic.” He expects the same level of connection and emotional depth when they play in Australia, noting that fans have had a long-standing relationship with the album.
Recording a New Album in Australia
One of the most exciting revelations from our conversation was the news that La Dispute will be staying in Australia after their show to record their next album. While Jordan was hazy on the exact location of the studio—somewhere north of Sydney—the plan is to complete the album in one go. The band has been working on new material for over a year, and they’re eager to put the finishing touches on it while Down Under.

Looking Forward and Staying Grounded
Despite their 20-year career, Jordan isn’t resting on his laurels. When asked about the band’s future, he emphasized that La Dispute is focused on staying connected to the creative process and continuing to tour as long as they enjoy it. After the forced break due to COVID, Jordan feels the band has been rejuvenated. “We have life left in us yet,” he said optimistically.
Closing Thoughts
As our conversation wrapped up, Jordan shared some personal favorites—like his admiration for Nick Cave and PJ Harvey, and his love for ice hockey and books. He also mentioned his favorite place to visit, Prague, a city that resonates with his deep appreciation for beautiful, historic settings.
La Dispute’s journey from Michigan to Australia and beyond is a testament to the power of staying true to your roots while continuing to evolve. Their upcoming show in Australia is sure to be a special experience for both the band and their dedicated fans. And with a new album on the horizon, it’s clear that La Dispute’s creative fire is far from extinguished.
