Sydney-based alt-rock quintet Pulse Mavens are back! The spunky female-fronted band are kicking things off with a long-awaited comeback show at the end of the month and new music will follow on from there. Pulse Mavens are not just any punk rock band though; they have that something special that makes music fans sit up and listen.

Lead vocalist, Kait Hudson recently had a chat with AMNplify about the comeback show and more. So, if you’ve been wondering…whatever happened to Pulse Mavens – read on below!

.

.

What has been happening with Pulse Mavens since receiving the AMP Tomorrow Fund grant?

We ended up going to Queensland and recording an EP with Bryce Moorhead (Violent Soho) called Orb, but it sounded so different to anything we had written before. It was very garage rock/indie rather than post hardcore/punk rock. We ended up releasing it as a new band called The Hazy Chains which was just myself and drummer (Yod). After releasing the EP through MGM and playing shows for a while we decided to part ways.

I began writing solo material with Stevie Knight (The Dead Love) at Electric Sun Studios and CJ (Pulse Mavens original lead guitarist) let me know he was interested to jump on board with it. A few days later so did Travis (another original member from Pulse Mavens), so we decided to get back together. It kind of just fell into place! We now have a new drummer (Skinner) who works at an egg factory and a new bassist (Julian), who used to play in a band with CJ a few years back. It worked out really well.

.

What makes Pulse Mavens different from other punk rock bands?

We are a little heavier instrumentally. All of the guys in the band love punk rock music but I’m really influenced by blues and rock and roll music, so I feel like drawing inspiration from different genres helps with originality.

.

How has the Pulse Mavens sound developed over the years?

Julian our bassist also sings harmonies with me and we’ve never had that before, so I really love that aspect of our music now. Our new songs are fresh and still hard hitting, but it just feels a bit more together than it did before.

.

Why is the time now right for a Pulse Mavens comeback show?

We have all been getting together and rehearsing and writing songs for a few months and we are all so excited to play shows. The shows are our pay off really.

.

What can fans expect from the upcoming comeback show?

They can expect to see the new line up, hearing all of our past songs, a few covers and a new song or two! We will also be selling merch and handing out CDs to anyone who comes out!

.

How did you go about securing the support acts for the comeback show?

We really wanted a venue in Sydney that was small and not on a stage, so that we could have an intimate show with anyone who digs our music; to say thank you for sticking around! Hide Away Bar seemed like the perfect option to do that. They’re so lovely there too.

.

What are the plans for Pulse Mavens following the comeback show?

We are going to record new tunes, play more shows and make some music videos! Stay tuned!

.

What has been your most memorable career highlight to date?

Probably winning the grant, but also opening for Hawthorne Heights and Red Jumpsuit Apparatus was pretty unreal! So many good times, it’s hard to pin point the best one.

.

What is something you would like to achieve career-wise that you haven’t done yet?

We would love to release an album!

.

If you could play any venue in the world, where would it be and why?

I really love Janis Joplin, so any venue she has played at would probably make me die and go to heaven!
