Have you always wanted to be a musician? When did you get the song writing bug?
Yeah, I’ve been playing music since I was a kid, and always wished I could do it professionally. I was just bouncing all over the place, going from classical piano to classical percussion, then composition, then eventually back to drums. It wasn’t until recently that I began writing songs, and now it finally feels like I’m on the right path.

How would you describe your sound? Why do you think people resonate with your music?
I’d say my sound is like a modern spin of the 80’s, keys-driven, with a lot of distorted rock organ. (I wanted to make the keys quite prominent, while keeping things still sounding dirty.) I’m so happy and flattered that people are resonating with my music! Maybe it brings them a sense of nostalgia after going through such hard times?

Which artist’s music and/or performance, past or present, inspires you today?
Oh so many! It’s hard to pick just a handful… I’ll start with the master drummer, John Bonham. Wow I wish I were around to watch him play live. He just had this incredible charisma on stage. I’m also inspired by the Beatles, Toto, Kate Bush, Carole King and Brain Wilson just to name a few.

Your new single Let It Go has just been released! Describe its origin and evolution.
I sat down at the piano and figured out the melody and chords first. The vocal rhythm came out as a rap for some reason, and the lyrics didn’t come until right at the end. I didn’t even know what I was singing about! But in hindsight, subconsciously, it is all very meaningful to me.

Is there an EP or Album on the drawing board?
Yeah, my debut EP ‘Get Up & Go’ is coming out on August 5th. It’s an ode to putting yourself out there and following your dreams. I was lucky enough to work with Lindsay Gravina on this one, and he helped me out so much with working out my sound and style.

Any tours or events coming up soon? What are you looking forward to, and what can the fans expect?
I’ve got my single launch gig on July 21st at The Old Bar, a headline gig at the Tote on August 6th, and my EP launch on August 28th at The Workers Club. I’m looking forward to bringing the drums out front, and having a whole heap of fun on stage! You’ll get to hear a bunch of my originals, including Let It Go and the songs from the upcoming EP.

How has COVID affected you to date? What have you introduced to balance the losses from missed events?
I was lucky enough to be able to do a lot of writing during lockdown. Sure, recording sessions were pushed right back, but as a relatively new artist, I didn’t have to go through that really tough lockdown slog of having no gigs to play at.

If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And why?
Oh wow, tough question! Probably Freddy Mercury, because of his insane vocal ability and stage presence. Or Kate Bush. I’ve got this song…. ;)

Do you have any long-term aspirations as a music artist?
It’s so great to see rock music making a strong comeback, and I would like to very much be involved in this scene. I would like to write lots and lots of songs, and perform them from the drums. The drums can be so theatrical, so why not make them a focal point!

What is the best thing about performing to a live audience? What’s been the career highlight so far?
I really am just a newbie to the industry, so it would be a dream to call this my career. The best thing about performing live is the connection that I feel with other people. It’s about sharing real life emotions and stories. It’s my happy place!

Finally, a few questions for some quick answers –
FAVOURITE:
Album – Right now, Bridge Over Troubled Water by Simon & Garfunkel.
Artist – Billy Joel
Movie – Borat? No… umm, I can do better…. Actually no… I can’t.
Place to visit – Italy, where my family are from.
Venue to play – Yet to be discovered
Food – Chocolate
Drink – Black Russians
Person in History – Beethoven
Tattoo – (If you don’t have one, what would you get?) Haha I don’t think I’m cool enough to ever pull off a tattoo. But if I HAD to….. I don’t know… maybe a ladybird, just cause they mean good luck to me.
