“Rock’n’roll is definitely in the hands of 19-year-old girls.” – Metric’s Emily Haines on co-producing The Beaches

“The same nitty-gritty vibe as The Strokes, Blondie, or The Clash, but with an edge unique only to a group going through their early twenties.” – Sophomore Mag

“The Beaches create a glam infused gritty garage rock sound that’s best delivered with the take it or leave it attitude that comes natural to them and that makes for genuinely exciting music.” – Noisey

How did you first get into music? When did it become a serious concern?
Everyone got into music in different ways. Jordan started learning guitar at the age of six, and being my older sister who I idolized, I followed soon after. Our parents ended up putting us in lessons together since I was painfully shy and immediately we started writing songs. Eliza grew up with music in her family – her dad plays guitar and is in a folk band and started teaching her around the same time as Jordan. She started messing around on a drum kit in her grandmother’s basement and was hooked ever since. Leandra started piano lessons at a young age, and went on to teach herself guitar, bass and drums. She’s classically trained! The Beaches formed in 2011 and we’ve been extremely dedicated to the band ever since.

What kind of music did you grow up on? What artists inspired you and which do you still look to now for ideas?
We all listened to different music growing up but we were all raised on classic rock. Eliza was obsessed with Led Zeppelin and is really influenced by John Bonham as a drummer. Le had The Beatles records constantly playing at her house. Jordan and I had a mix of 70’s rock (Bowie, Fleetwood Mac and The Rolling Stones) on regularly. Our passion for 70’s rock really united us as friends and as a band.

How did you get together and decide to form a band?
Jordan and I were friends with Eliza from elementary school and when we decided that to form a band she was an obvious choice to be our drummer. In middle school we were in a pop punk band called Done With Dolls and were featured on the Canadian version of Disney Channel. However, we were never really passionate about the music we were playing. It wasn’t until high school that we decided that it was time for a serious change. We met Leandra (who was one of the only fans of our previous band) and immediately her natural musical talent blew us away. We asked her to join us on this new venture, playing the kind of rock music that we all grew up listening to and that’s how The Beaches formed!

How would you describe your vibe?
We’re definitely really inspired by 70’s rock sound wise and look wise.

What is Snake Tongue about?
Snake Tongue is a song about unwanted attention, and being empowered by telling off people who make you feel uncomfortable. It’s really cool to be able to write a song where so many people can relate to this message. It’s essentially an anthem to tell creeps to beware.

Any new EP or Album currently in development?
We’re currently working on new music and we’ll be releasing it soon, so stay tuned!

Can we expect you on tour in Australia anytime soon?
We’d absolutely LOVE to come to Australia, we’re not sure when, but hopefully soon mate.

Where would you love to perform, if you could choose anywhere in the world?
We’d all really love to tour Europe! We love playing shows in new places we’ve never been before and connecting with fans in other countries.

You won the 2018 JUNO Award for ‘Breakthrough Group Of The Year’! What was the first thing you did when you knew you had won?
We screamed a lot. I think we were the loudest people in that room for sure. We went up to accept our award, and then all chugged a celebratory beer before doing a ton of interviews. We ended the night off right with burgers back at our hotel.

What has been your most memorable live show yet?
There have been so many unforgettable shows. A really special one this year was when we played Osheaga festival in Montreal. It was on one of the hottest days this summer but still 5,000 people showed up for our set. It was so cool to see such a young audience be so supportive of rock music.

If you could pick absolutely anyone to bring on tour with you, whom would you pick and why? (Dead or Alive)
That’s really tricky! I know that we’d all have different answers for this, but since it’s me Kylie writing this, I’m going to say The Strokes. They were one of the most important bands to me growing up, and still are. They are so cool, effortless and badass. I think that would be the best show ever.

What’s next for you in 2019?
We’re about to head out on the road across the states with Passion Pit, which we’re really excited about. Hopefully we’ll be releasing new music soon and going over to Europe and the UK to tour.

Where do you see yourselves in a year’s time?
Definitely on the road. We love playing live. It’s our collective favourite thing about being in the band.

What are your major goals or milestones for the longer term future?
We want to continue to grow as a band, and play everywhere we can. Our goal is to get as many young people listening to rock n roll as we can. It was so important to us growing up, and if we can be that band that helps inspire kids to form rock bands that would be the coolest thing.
