Legs Electric

.

Legs Electric summon the spirit of the golden days of heavy rock – overcharging ’70s blues-based riffs with a full-power vocal attack and a live show worthy of Sunset Strip. In just a few years, the Legs Electric ladies have chiselled their name in stone as one of the most electrifying, must-see bands in their home city of Perth.

Dave Bruce caught up with Kylie Soanes (drums) for a chat.

How did the four of you find each other? Where did it all begin?

Legs Electric started in 2012, the original line up was Laura McCormack (Guitar), Abby Soanes (Bass), myself (drums), Ama Quinsee (Vocals).

I had played with my sister and Laura in other bands previously however, we never got to really write our own songs. I found Ama singing AC/DC in a rock club in Perth and she blew my mind and it took me a good six months of persistence in getting her to join our band.

Abby and Laura were the foundations of Legs and left only a year ago for personal reasons. I wasn’t sure how or if I could replace such HUGE members and I was very lucky to find such amazing musicians Erin Gooden (bass), Elana Haynes (guitar). Erin found me, I needed a fill in bass player to play with Legs who was supporting a band from the UK as my sister wasn’t available for a show and she jumped straight in and was absolutely amazing. We had met Elana previously and played alongside her cover bands, she’s a seasoned player in the cover scene and had never been in an original project before. When she auditioned for Legs my jaw literally hit the floor she is a killer guitarist. Every member brings such a big personality into this band. It’s so much fun.

.

Are you all Perth girls? What kind of music did you all grow up on?

We’re all from Perth and grew up with the classics from the 70s and 80s: Led Zeppelin, The Who, Deep Purple, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Grand Funk Railroad, you name it. All the good stuff!

.

You are all talented musos. Can you each describe in a sentence or two how that talent surfaced and found its way to where you are today?

I don’t tell many people this as I used to be so embarrassed but now I think it’s funny. The only reason I wanted to play drums at age 11 was I wanted to meet Zac Hanson from Hanson and play better then he could. We all make mistakes I suppose! Then I found Keith Moon and there you have it.

.

How do you find the balance between your everyday lives and your musical ones.

Hectic! I am lucky because I have the best job in the world, I get to work with animals every day as well as play drums. Ama is a dental nurse, Erin is an accountant and Elana is a graphic designer. We love being busy in our everyday lives and our musical ones. It can definitely be hectic, we love it and somehow make it work. Music always comes first.

You’ve just released your new EP “Two Sides”. Must feel good to get the project completed. Can you describe its origins and evolution?

We called the EP Two Sides because that’s exactly how it was made.  Made with the two sides of Legs Electric – the old line up and the new line up. ‘Wanna Riot’ and ‘Strange Addiction’ were recorded with Laura and Abby with Joel Quartermain (Eskimo Joe) and ‘Dark Paradise’, ‘Shine Right Through’ and ‘Kingdom’ were recorded with Elana and Erin with Kenny Watt (Killer Watt Studios).

.

How do you see your sound progressing in the future? Who were and are your inspirations?

For the first time everyone in Legs Electric can sing. We have so many more harmony parts in our songs which is awesome. We’re currently writing a new record and the songs are changing as we experiment with new sounds, various guitar pedals, heaps of FUZZ and vocal melodies.

.

If someone had never listened to *Legs Electric* before, what song of yours would you recommend they listen to?

I always show them ‘Dark Paradise’ off the new record and then ‘Trigger’ off the older EP, released 2014. It’s like one extreme to the next and shows the diversity of the band.

.

Do you have any plans for an album?

Yes, yes and yes. We’re always writing new songs and currently writing the next record.

.

It’s been a few years now. Where do you see yourselves in the next 3-5 years?

Playing in front of as many people as possible. Having a few more albums out in the universe. Pretty much world domination would be nice!

.

.

I see you are touring the EP and coming across to the East. What are you looking forward to most?

We’re looking forward to the whole tour. We have never played in Adelaide before so that’s exciting. Frankie’s in Sydney rocks, we always have the best time there!

.

You have toured with some great bands in the past. If you could pick absolutely anyone to bring on tour with you, whom would you pick? (Dead or Alive)

It would be cool to have Taylor Swift come up for a jam (The girls will kill me saying this). I know I have made it when when I have met The Rolling Stones or at least get to support them, just once!

.

Are there any venues or locations you aspire to play in the future? What are your major goals or milestones for the future?

We just want to play in front of as many people as possible. It would be awesome to play the big arena shows. We can aim for Madison Square Gardens in New York! That’s not asking too much is it?!

.

Finally, this is a paragraph dedicated to some quick discovery. Can you tell me your favorite album, artist, movie, holiday venue, drink, meal and person (living or dead) and some brief reasons why?

Album: Neil Young – Harvest. This record always puts me in the best mood.

Artist: Steve Browne (Monsters as Friends). He’s a local Perth artist and is so amazing. He painted my dog as Princess Leia.

Holiday Venue: The Ocean. I don’t care where I am as long as I’m near the ocean.

Drink: Whiskey. The best.

Meal: Whiskey. Yummy.

Person: My dad, Steve Soanes (he’s alive). He taught me everything there is to know about music.
