Congratulations on being crowned The Voice Australia winner. What’s the biggest and or most memorable lesson that the experience has taught you?
Don’t ever compare yourself to others. Believe in what you have and the work you have put in and just keep striving to learn and be better.

Is there anything you wish you knew before choosing to compete on the show?
I knew it would be a crazy experience, but I didn’t know it would be this crazy. But I think even if I knew what was going to happen it could have never properly prepared me.

What was it like being mentored by Rita Ora?
Working with Rita Ora was an amazing experience. She is a star but so quickly made me feel comfortable and as if we were just friends working on music together. She was down to earth, fun and super talented. Can’t thank Rita enough for the belief she instilled in me and all that I learn along the journey.

Let’s get back to the beginning, where did your journey with music originate?
I was always singing from a young age as my grandpa was a great musician however I didn’t start talking it seriously until I was around 17 when I joined the music class at school and realised how much I loved performing. When I turned 18 I had my first paid gig at a pub in Mornington and from then on I took every gig that came my way. I played at cafes, pubs, weddings, festivals & everything in between. I did make an application for the voice when I was 18 however I was unsuccessful and didn’t get make it to the part  where I could perform on the proper Voice stage. They said I wasn’t ready, and looking back on myself as an 18 year old I couldn’t agree more. So I went away, worked on my music craft and started to work out what sort of artist I wanted to be and was writing as much original music as I could. Eventually in early 2021 I released my first single independently and have since released 2 more singles that show who I am as an artist. So when the opportunity came to audition for the voice again I knew I was ready this time and knew exactly the artist I wanted to be.

Who are your musical influences? How has this evolved over the years? Does the type of music you listen to influence the type of music you play?
My influences are forever changing and I think that is the nature for the music industry now. There is so many amazing artists to listen to and so much music!
You just can’t pigeon hole yourself to a few artists or genres you have to listen to so much stuff!
My song writing influencers change a lot as there are so many amazing writers but people like Dermot Kennedy, Dean Lewis, Finneas, Julia Michael, Lewis Capaldi, Clinton Kane & Blake Rose are just some of my favourite and inspiring writers. Along with these amazing writers I love listening to Kid Laroi, Holly Humberstone, Ruel, Tate McRae, Sam Thompkins & other more local artists like Raria, San Joseph & Cotta.
All these people absolutely inspire me and my writing and musical style is a direct resemblance of all these incredible artists as well as the experiences I’ve been through over my life.

Describe your sound, and what fans can expect from a live performance?
I absolutely love my acoustic guitar so you can expect that in a lot of my songs. Sad music is my go to but I also love to have a good time so will make some music to fit all vibes of the day. I write super real and emotive songs and really do think people will resonate with my music easily. Think Dean Lewis, Lewis Capaldi & Ed Sheeran blended together. That’s what I’m aiming for.

Have you got any upcoming live performances lined up that we should know about?
I will be playing at the TV Week Logie Awards Live Site at The Star Gold Coast along with the Rogue Traders on Sunday 19th of June.  I’ll be opening the show at 2pm.  I’m looking forward to lots more live shows too, stay tuned!

Choosing music over football, what led to that life changing career decision?
It became an obvious decision for me. I was more passionate about my music and the thought of doing it for the rest of my life. It was definitely hard to stop training and playing football because I absolutely loved it but knew it was the right thing to do if I wanted to take my music to the next level.

Your latest single “Wasted Time” has just been released. Can you share the inspiration behind the track and also the origins of the title?
Wasted Time was written by Ned Houston & Robby DeSa two talented Sydney musicians. This song was a perfect fit for me. It had the acoustic emotive elements I love while also lending itself to that pop feel.
While I didn’t write this song I have built such an immense connection to it and the place it now holds for me and the journey it represents.
While I can’t be completely sure as it wasn’t my decision I can only assume the title was created because it’s the most common phrase used in the song and just makes sense.

You mention the track ‘taking you to the most beautiful and romantic place’ tell me about where this place is for you?
It honestly just makes me want to go dance on the beach or jump in the car and go for a long and pointless drive with my girlfriend. Even just dance around the living room.

The latest single artwork features your girlfriend, how important has your support network been throughout your musical journey?
The cover is something that I had in mind as soon as I heard the song for the first time. My girlfriend Yonja along with all my family and close friends have been beyond supportive not just throughout this voice process but well before the show. They have wanted my dreams and goals to come true just as much as I have. They came to every gig and while sometimes were my biggest critics were always supportive and gave me all the support I needed to pursue a career in the music industry.

What does the song writing process look like for you? Where do you find the inspiration for your music?
My song writing process starts with my guitar. I play and play and play until I find something I like. I then get my voice memo app and start recording me singing random words and melodies until something sticks. Some songs are super quick and easy for me to write and others are a nightmare but I absolutely love that creative process and can’t wait to continue to build my song writing ability and work with new writers and producers to make some really cool stuff. Listening to music is my biggest inspiration to write, especially seeing my favourite artists live. Sometimes ill go to live gig, get home, and write until 1 or 2 in the morning because I just have so much inspiration and need to get the words out on paper.

You’ve won a recording contract with Universal Music Australia, what does this mean to you? What can fans expect from this, is there a debut album on the cards?
This means everything. The 100k is cool but the contract is what I had my eyes set on. It’s going to be a lot of hard work but I’m so excited. An album would be a dream come true but right now I’m back in the studio working on new music and my next single.

If you could give your younger self one piece of advice what would it be?
START MUSIC EARLIER!
It took me so long to really commit to music as a career choice. I didn’t realise it could make you a living or even be a possibility. In saying this I also believe everything happens for a reason and I’m exactly where I need to be in this moment.

.

.

If you could play with anyone, dead or alive, who would it be and why?
Get me on a stage with Dean Lewis, Dermot Kennedy or Lewis Capaldi and I would pass out. I would then get back up and have the best fun of my life.

Dream place to tour and or venue to play?
I love the forum in my hometown Melbourne. This is a dream venue and I have my eyes set on this. And before I look any bigger such as the MCG or Wembley I want to achieve the Forum.

This moment is just the beginning for you, what’s next for Lachie Gill? What are your ultimate dreams for your music career?
It is funny because it is such a big moment to win something of this magnitude. But at the end of the day there will be a new winner in a year’s time and to be real people will forget about me unless I can give them a reason to remember and that’s what I’ll do. It all comes back to the music, no matter how you look at it if you can’t write and release good music this industry is not for you. I’ve got a lot of hard work to do but I’m so excited and can’t wait to take every opportunity that comes my way and absolutely run with it.
