Have you always wanted to be a musician? When did you get the song writing bug?
I grew up as a dancer, starting ballet lessons when I was 5 years old.  From there I fell into singing when my dancing teacher said to me (around age 12), “Laura … you can actually sing”.  None of my immediate family are musical, although I recently found out that my Great Grandmother had a Stage Production company & was a stage performer in the UK.
At around 15 y/o I picked up my brothers left handed guitar and started writing lyrics after listening to Kasey Chambers album, The Captain. I didn’t stop after that.

How would you describe your sound? Why do you think people resonate with your music?
My sound is always evolving!  I’m always looking for new and interesting ways to make music.  Currently it’s in more of a ‘Country Rock / Pop’ sphere.  The common thread of feedback when people listen to my music is about the stories the tunes tell.  I think what makes the songs relatable is that so far, all of the songs have come from a place of personal experience or written around topics that we all face and feel. I think and feel the same as everybody else does, I just have the platform to put those thoughts into songs that hopefully people can relate to.

Which artist’s music and/or performance, past or present, inspires you today?
I worship Brandi Carlile.  She is incredible.  Her vocal performance, they way she writes with the ability to take you straight into her world or the story that she’s trying to tell. I admire her implicitly.

Your new single ‘Days Gone By’ has just been released! Describe its origin and evolution.
My new single, Days Gone By, was written as a follow up to my previous single, The Road.  The Road was a story of feeling lost or ‘in the wrong place’.  Days Gone By is about accepting that life is a journey and wherever it takes you, whatever failures, mistakes or successes you face it’s all important.  Instead of regretting the past, it’s a story of celebrating it and stepping forward with confidence and conviction.  Something I’m empowering myself to do everyday!

Is there an EP or Album on the drawing board?
There has been talks of an album yes! It’s a little scary to think about putting an entire body of work out there and not just a ‘casual’ single every now and then.  There is definitely the material and Nick Morrissey (my co-writer / Guitarist and life partner) are always endeavouring to write more and be prolific.  We’re just considering the best time to release an album.  It’s on the cards!  We shall see what unfolds.

Any tours or events coming up soon? What are you looking forward to, and what can the fans expect?
There are a bunch of really exciting shows coming up!  We just played to a sold out crowd in my hometown of Kalbar for the single release party.  We sold out in just over 24hrs!  It was such a fun night.  So more of these are definitely on the cards. PLUS some spots on exciting lineups coming up;
Special Guest Artist for Daryl Braithwaite who has formed a super group, ‘The Caprettos’, happening on the 19th March at the Hound n Stag in Arundel
We’ll be playing with James Blundell for the ‘Down on the Farm, Country Campout’ event happening on the last weekend of March and into April.
And I’m also playing on ‘The Long Sunset’ happening in Canungra in April with Lime Cordiale, Tia Gostelow, Hatchie and other local legends. We’ll be playing the ‘Campfire Sessions’ spot on the Friday night.
You can find all show details on my website www.laurafrank.com.au

If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And why?
Brandi Carlile! As per reasons listed above.  I just think she is incredible.

Do you have any long-term aspirations as a music artist?
My long term aspiration is to be a long term artist!  I intend to be making and playing music until the day I die.

What is the best thing about performing to a live audience? What’s been the career highlight so far?
Career highlight so far was playing to a sold out crowd for my ‘Live at The Barn’ real life crowdfunding gig which took place at the beautiful Scenic Rim Farm Shop & Cafe & Elderflower Farm.  It was 2 hours of live, unreleased original music and the love and support I felt that night is something I’ll never forget.  I love playing shows in my hometown.  The Scenic Rim is a magical place to be.  I think the best thing about playing live is the connection and transference of energy with the crowd.  Creating memories with them.  It’s really special.

Laura Frank Bio

She was pouring froths at a brewery, shortly after ending a long term relationship and closing down 2 businesses which she’d run for the better part of a decade. Laura Frank’s entire life had been turned on its head. Heartache and anxiety began to take hold. Yet, she found a way to weather the storm – she wrote songs about both.

The QLD based singer-songwriter draws from her love of rock poets like Bruce Springsteen and Brandi Carlile, as well as contemporary trailblazers, Miley Cyrus and Lady Gaga, to influence her edgy Country sound. She’s a firecracker on stage with a rare gift for storytelling – she’s been through enough to share real heartbreak and joy.

Raised in Charlwood, QLD, Frank attended dance classes 4 to 5 times a week, where she discovered her future passion – singing. “We were rehearsing for a ‘Song & Dance’ number in one of our dance classes when my teacher said to me … ‘Frank… I think you can actually sing’.”

After teaching herself to play her brother’s seldom used, left-handed guitar (as a right-hander) she started writing her own songs. Pretty soon she was bound for the big smoke, Brisbane.

She formed a duo, ‘Bamford Cook’, which saw her travel to LA to record their debut EP with Trapt’s Rob Torres. The pair later travelled with Sarah McLeod (Superjesus) as the support act for her solo shows.

At only 21 years old, Frank opened a Mixed Martial Arts, Strength & Conditioning Facility and then a café in Newstead. The thriving entrepreneur also found time to volunteer for the theatre company, ‘indelabilityarts’, who provide employment for people with disabilities. A company of which she’s now the Producer.

She’s also had continued involvement with ‘Muso Magic’ and ‘Outback Tracks’; programs run by Chocolate Starfish lead singer, Adam Thompson, that provide songwriting opportunities to rural indigenous communities.

Soon everything changed. The breakdown of her long term relationship meant the collapse of her businesses and a whirlwind of change. Whilst she sat alone one night in her one-bedroom Ascot apartment, watching ‘Tiny House Nation’ on Netflix, she had a life changing idea.

After deciding to move back to her family property in the Scenic Rim and build a home from recycled materials (with help from her Dad and her now partner Nick), Frank is more inspired than ever. “This 100% changed my life,” exclaims the singer-songwriter. “Because we were passionate about sustainability and being considered custodians of the planet it was important to us to lessen our impact on the environment whilst we were building. We completed everything ourselves aside from the things we weren’t legally allowed to do.”

Since her return to the country Frank has written and recorded a swag of charting singles. ‘Things I’d Rather Do’ and ‘Leave It All Behind’ reached the top 10 in the Australian Country Music Charts, while ‘Pretty’ and ‘Simple Girl’ made it to number one on the iTunes Music Video Charts.

Frank’s energetic live show – known for its costume changes and ability to make you laugh and cry – has been heard on stages across the country. She’s supported James Blundell on multiple occasions as well as Chocolate Starfish and Sarah McLeod. She’s slated to appear as a special guest for Daryl Braithwaite in March 2023.

Most recently, Frank joined the ever-popular Write Like A Girl showcase at the 2023 Tamworth Country Music Festival. She also took home the award for Most Promising Future Star at the Australian Country Music People’s Choice Awards.

Frank is set to release a string of new music, starting with the single, ‘Days Gone By’, on February 17, 2023. The ballsy track was recorded by ARIA and Golden Guitar winning producer, Jordan Power, at Bernard Fanning’s studio in Northern NSW and is somewhat of a hat tip to her previous single, ‘The Road’. “[The Road] was about feeling lost and finding your path.  This song is about standing strongly on that path and moving forward with your life, saying thanks to the days past.”

Laura Frank draws on a wealth of experience when crafting her songs, which range from heartfelt ballads to raucous toe tappers, with one common thread – authenticity. Her voice, irresistibly fierce, possesses a vulnerability that lets you know she’s truly lived the words she sings.
