“Recent winners of BRA Folk Single of the Year award, Lennox Lust answer some of our questions about all things new album and more…”

Firstly congratulations on Folk Single of the Year! What else has been happening lately?
Thanks! We were so happy to see that song get recognition of that caliber. Our single TillI Find A Me To Defendwas released mid-last year and we were notified recently that it won Folk Single of The Yearin the 2018 Banks Radio Australia awards. To receive this from such an admirable judging panel was a really great achievement for us.
Also, we have been doing a lot of writing and demoing. We are excited to announce that this year we are going to release a new record. Its been a few years since our first, so we are stoked to get a new set of songs out and show all our fans how we have grown.

How did you each first get into music? When did it become a serious concern?
Lauren – I was literally enrolled to become a teacher. Teaching runs in the family and my mum definitely wanted me to have a stable job. It was a bit of a rumble when I told her I wanted to sing songs for a living! Shes proud of me, so it all worked out in the end.
Mick – My story went a little different. It was actually my mum who got me my first gig! It was at a bar in my home town. She had to come with me of course because I was underage. It was pretty easy for my family to see that I was full force on the music thing so they probably couldnt have stopped me if they tried.

So this new album you speak of! Do you already have an idea of how you want the album to sound?
We do have a pretty good idea of how we want the album to be set out. Its going to be a full 12 track record. The first half is going to be much like our first album, stripped back with just acoustics and vocals, much like you would hear if we were playing the song to you in your living room. The second half will have much more to listen to, with a full band format.

Do you have a favourite track on the album and if so, why?
We have been writing so much lately and the few songs we have chosen to put on the record so far are pretty strong in our opinion. In saying that, in our heads theyre all numbers. Most of them arent even named yet, which is kind of funny. We do the work of writing a song and then say All good, well name it later. But anyway, no we dont have a favourite child – I mean song!

Who will you be working with on the release?
We are stoked to jump into the studio with the legend Rick Grossman (Hoodoo Gurus). We just love the energy and ideas that he brings to the studio and look forward to working with him again. Behind the console will be Jye Hannan. We work so well with Jye and he is so amazing at seeing our vision and bringing the tracks to life. We cant wait to see who else will be added to the line up of musicians playing on the album.

.

.

Who are your major music inspirations at the moment?
We have so many and are finding more and more constantly. I think if you look at our most played right now, it would be the new Kacey Musgraves album. It is literally perfect. BUY IT NOW! But in general our inspirations are artists/songwriters like John Mayer, First Aid Kit, The Civil Wars & Chris Stapleton.

How has your songwriting evolved throughout your career?
We think our songwriting has evolved quite a bit, in the sense of maturity. We both love writing from personal experiences and also the experiences of others around us. Telling the story for someone through a song is such an amazing thing. Our first album draws inspiration from family members and our own personal growth into adulthood, whereas most of the songs we have written for the next album, although personal, include themes we feel are very relatable to most people. The amazing thing about songwriting is that there are countless ways of approaching it and its processes. I dont think well ever stick with one particular process which will keep things exciting.

What does your recording process in the studio look and sound like? Do you always work together in the studio? Or do you work separately at times?
Lauren – We are both always in the studio at all times and wont leave at all. I definitely want to be there for Micks vocals takes and I would guess he would want to be there for mine. We are both very involved and excited as it will only be our second time doing this and the first experience was nothing but magical.
Mick – As far as processes go, for the last album we recorded our guitars together at the same time to try capture as much live chemistry as we could. We will be taking that into the next album by recording all the band rhythms together as if we were performing live. For us, I think our strongest suit is playing live, so if we mimic that in the studio, I think it will lead to the best result. We will then put any extra guitars/keys over that and then finish with the vocals, like icing on cake.

Finally, this is a paragraph dedicated to some quick discovery. Really corny, but for the fans, can you tell me your favorite album, artist, movie, place, drink, meal and person (living or dead) and some brief reasons why? Answer some or all please?
