Let’s go back to the beginning, where did your journey with music originate?
I’ve always been singing and performing in choirs and school bands ever since I was young. The first song I wrote was in year 6 for my primary school teacher – it’s very cringe now but since then, I realised I could write songs and use music to convey feelings and thoughts, and from there, I got the music bug.

Who are your musical influences? How has this evolved over the years? Does the type of music you listen to influence the type of music you play?
My music changes with the mood and I like to mix things up, particularly on stage. I get bored easily playing the same style, so my sound would be a combination of acoustic pop with some jazz and electronic influences. In other words, I like to experiment and keep it fresh. Imagine Portishead and Norah Jones, The Beatles and Taylor Swift have an Eva Cassidy baby.

You recorded your first album “Botany Street” at Abbey Road Studios, what was the experience like? How did this opportunity come about?
Recording at Abbey Road was a surreal experience. When I was recording my debut album Botany Street, I was working with a producer who asked me “If you could record anywhere in the world, where would that be?” And of course, I said “Abbey Road.” So that was it. I saved up a lot of money to record there myself and fulfill a lifelong dream.

Congratulations on the release of your latest single ”Cliche”. Can you share the inspiration behind the track and also the origins of the title?
Have you ever found yourself desiring the attention of somebody who just isn’t available? Or found yourself falling into the role of being the cliched love sick person yearning for the attention of someone who is just not that into you but you’re unable to move on? That’s what Cliche is about. It’s about a desire to break free from being pigeonholed in a role and recognising the need to make a conscious decision to take control of your own destiny and do what is best for yourself by not being beholden to the whims of another person.

This song also touches on exploration of unrequited love in the form of  rejection experienced by artists in the music industry. Do you have any tips/insights for artists who may be experiencing this themselves?
Yes. I turned the notion of being love sick for another person, to represent a wider unrequited love – that being the rejection artists can receive from the music industry. It can be draining and disheartening navigating the music business. My advice would be to just keep going if it brings you happiness. Only you can make it happen for yourself, so keep the faith. This is actually the inspiration for my upcoming single, On the Edge – coming out in July.

You have an upcoming July release called “On the Edge” about the fear of the unknown. How do you overcome/manage your own fear and the doubt that can creep in?
Take a deep breath, have a bath, take a nap and realise that it’s all ok. Just take another small step in the direction you want to go. Nothing will happen immediately but it’s important to enjoy the ride and take a leap of faith over ‘the edge.’

Describe your sound, and what fans can expect from a live performance?
Coming to my show is a unique experience. No show is the same. Depending on the venue, we can play broken down acoustic intimate shows or pump up the atmosphere with jazz funk and pop tunes. Like my albums, my live show is diverse, blending acoustic pop with elements of jazz, electronic music and even funk. We include a selection of songs from my music catalogue as well as cover songs adapted to our style. Inspired by such artists as The Beatles, Adele, Norah Jones, Taylor Swift and Lana Del Ray, I strive to create an emotive and fun experience, interacting with the audience through banter and audience participation.

Do you have any upcoming live performances lined up that we should know about?
Yes, after our sold out show at Meraki in March, we are back performing there again on Saturday 3rd June. Tickets are on sale now.

What’s next for Lucy, is there an album on the cards?
I’ll be releasing my upcoming single, On the Edge, in July with a corresponding video clip and then embarking on an interstate tour including Melbourne and Adelaide. Be sure to subscribe to my newsletter or follow on my socials for upcoming events.

Dream place to tour and or venue to play?
Well I just filmed the video clip for On the Edge at the Enmore Theatre. Such an amazing experience and just like Macbeth, a part of my self-fulfilling prophecy is that one day I will play there…..one day!
