How would you describe your sound? Why do you think people resonate with your music?
I think my sound is a mixture of folk music with singer songwriter.

What is the best thing about performing to a live audience?
The interaction with the audience and to feel their connection to my music.

What can fans expect from your “Rosa” Australian tour? What are you looking forward to?
They can expect an intimate concert with lots of stories.

What has the reception to the album been like?
It has been beautiful. I feel like people really understand where the songs come from and react to them in a really emotional way.

Have you always created your own music? Where did it all begin? When did you know you wanted to be a musician?
I started writing my music at the age of 12. Since then I was sure this was what I wanted to do with my life.

You were part of the first-ever Portuguese act to win Eurovision in 2017! How has life changed since then?
It didn’t really change so much. I have been touring like I did before Eurovision. The only thing that changed is that I have been writing a lot more for other people and I really like doing that.

You have just announced your first-ever Australian tour! Are you excited to be visiting Australia?
I have been in Australia for 3 days now and I’m in love with it. Everyone is really nice and nature is everywhere. I feel really fortunate.

“Rosa” is your fifth studio album release. Can you share the process of writing and recording the album?
I wrote the songs like I write every song, with the guitar. The production process though was really special. I met a few times with the producer to work on each song so we could find our approach on each one. Then, we recorded everything together with no edits. We wanted the imperfections to be a part of the music.

Is there a song from the album which is particularly close to your heart? One that you are exceptionally proud of, or excited for people to listen to and enjoy?
It keeps on changing but I guess maybe “Dois namorados” also because of the story behind it.

If you could record with any other music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? Why?
Joni Mitchell. She is one of my favourite composers and singers.

Where do you see yourself in a years time? Do you have any long-term aspirations as a music artist?
I see myself doing exactly what I am doing now, recording music, playing it in Portugal and around the world and writing for other people.

Finally, a few questions for some quick answers –
FAVOURITE:
Album – the koln concert

Portuguese artist
LUISA SOBRAL
announces first-ever Australian tour
off the back of her
critically acclaimed album
“ROSA”

Critically acclaimed Portuguese singer, songwriter and composer, Luísa Sobral is finally making her way to Australian shores this March. Celebrating the release of her revered fifth studio album Rosa, Sobral will play the beloved WOMADelaide Festival as well as a run of headline shows in Melbourne and Sydney.

Lauded far and wide as one of the most important composers and singers in a new generation of Portuguese artists, Luísa Sobral has achieved immense international success in her decade long career. Her debut LP The Cherry On My Cake quickly went Platinum after many weeks topping the local charts, whilst follow up release Lu-Pu-I-Pi-Sa-Pa received Gold with lead single ‘João’ playing its way into the hearts of millions of Portuguese listeners.

Sobral’s fourth, semi self-titled album Luísa was a risky collaborative effort involving some of the scene’s most esteemed talent. Produced by renowned American producer Joe Henry and featuring seasoned jazz musicians and multi-instrumentalists Marc Ribot, Greg Leisz, Jay Bellerose, Patrick Warren, David Piltch and Levon Henry, the LP was immediately declared one of 2016’s best albums by a slew of Portuguese critics.

Having performed at a multitude of festivals and events in over 15 countries including Austin’s SXSW, Barcelona Jazz Festival, London Jazz Festival, and a performance on Later… with Jools Holland, Luísa has garnered a mass of dedicated fans the world over. She has received two Globos de Ouro nominations (The Portuguese equivalent of The Golden Globes), and received a Commander of the Order of Merit from the Portuguese President together with her brother, after becoming the first first-ever Portuguese act to win the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest with her career defining composition ‘Amar pelos dois’.

Now, following her most personal, reflective and raw release to date, Luísa Sobral is finally making her way to our shores for her Rosa Australian Tour with a handful of select intimate performances across the country. Do not miss your chance to catch one of the most cherished live performers of our time when Luísa Sobral lands in the country this March.
