About MAISIE B.
Maisie B is an award winning singer-songwriter and multi instrumentalist who weaves together her favourite elements of folk, jazz and indie pop into songs that are texturally rich and emotionally charged.
Maisie has an expansive musical resume; she has been performing her original music in Adelaide since 2017, initially as a soloist, and has supported notable local acts.
From 2018-2021 Maisie wrote, recorded and released her first DIY project “The Three Sugars EP”, which has allowed her to reach for and achieve several opportunities for further project creation. Alongside this, Maisie studied the Bachelor of Jazz Performance (saxophone), which is where she met the members of her 7 piece Maisie B band, who she has been performing with since 2021.
Maisie received funding in 2023 from the Helpmann Academy to record a new body of work with her band. “The Nothing But The Sun EP”, set to be released late 2024, is a project aiming to exist in the centre of the Venn diagram of First Aid Kit, Fleetwood Mac and Yebba.
Most recently Maisie B. won Peoples Choice Folk Artist award at the 2024 SA Music Awards, a great achievement and honour.
Congratulations on the release of your new EP! What’s it all about? Describe its origin and evolution.
Thank you very much, it’s so wonderful to finally have it out in the world and it already has been received so kindly which is amazing. Each song on The Nothing But The Sun EP tells the story of a different way that goodness or positivity can shine through each of us and the situations we find ourselves in – from seeing the good in others despite conflict, to putting your best self forward despite your personal struggles. This collection of songs was written in 2022 and recorded in early 2023 with my band at Forest Range Studios in the Adelaide Hills. They all started out very acoustic and then grew and grew to contain so many layers and elements from vocals to horns to synths. As the songs came together as a conceptual project in my mind, I came up with ideas for how the whole thing could be bookended: the opening track features the melody of the last track (in a different key), and the finale references back to each of the other songs. I hope the EP will have listeners returning again and again and noticing something new with each play through. What are the signature tracks on the EP , and which are your favorites to play live?
All of the songs feel special and signature in their own way because they’re each so unique and all tell their own powerful story. My favourite to play live is Pull The Rug, because of its driving energy and the way it builds with each band member’s layer. The title track of the EP is also fun to perform live because instead of the bass solo like in the recording we usually have each member of the band take a little solo as a celebration of each person’s contribution. NBTS is also a very emotional and cathartic song for me to perform because I am in a much better place now than I was when I wrote it, and performing it feels like an ode of forgiveness and love to my former self who was struggling. What tours and events are coming up? What are you looking forward to, and what can the fans expect?
I am really looking forward to launching the EP with my full band on January 24th at the Wheatsheaf Hotel! We’ll be joined by Adelaide indie folk darlings St Jacques, who are one of my fave bands here. I’m also playing a solo set at New Found Sound, a Port Adelaide festival, on January 18th, and looking to play some interstate shows in March too. What are your long-term aspirations as a music artist and how are you progressing towards them?
I want to tour nationally and perform at folk festivals. I’ve been trying my hand at making little Tiktok videos to build my audience and reach new people, which I’ve found to be really fun and rewarding! My next big goal is to record my debut album, and I have a dream of recording it myself and learning some production skills. With that in mind, what piece of advice would you give to an artist starting out?
Just start and don’t get caught up waiting for the “right” time – the right time is right now! You gain so much by simply doing the thing and learning from experience. My other piece of advice is from a quote I read about a year ago which is – the best work that anybody ever writes is the work that is on the verge of embarrassing them. I have that quote saved on my laptop desktop so I always see it! There’s power and magic in being vulnerable, embrace it.What is the best thing about performing to a live audience? What’s been the career highlight so far?
I love the connection I make with audiences when I perform. It’s wonderful to be performing a vulnerable song and then to look out into the crowd and see someone smiling or sharing an emotional moment with a friend because of my song. I also love to connect with my band and make music with them, it’s so much fun and exciting being on stage with such wonderful humans/musicians, it’s a truly special place that I find myself in whenever I perform with everyone. My career highlight was definitely recently winning an SA Music Award, but a close second would be when I performed at WOMAD in the NSS’ shipping container stage last year with my band. As part of that experience I was challenged to write a song in an hour in front of the audience, which definitely sparked some new creative ideas for me.Here are three general questions your fans will find interesting about you:
1. What is the craziest thing you’ve ever done? Last year I went on my first solo trip to Europe. It was “crazy” for me to do that because I had always dreamt of traveling alone but never thought I’d be brave enough to actually do it, but following ending a long-term relationship, reclaiming my independence so that I could do that trip was empowering and so important for me. I’m currently planning another solo trip to Japan for February next year!
2. What is the one topic you can talk about for hours? I love to talk about my favourite movie which is Coraline! I am fascinated by stop motion claymation and the precise and painstaking work that goes into the whole process. I also love all of the crazy theories behind the plot and how maybe Coraline never escaped the other mother’s world… There’s so many Youtube videos about this movie and I’ve definitely gotten to sleep late many times after going on a good old Coraline deep dive.
3. What is the thing you like most about yourself? It can be a double-edged sword but I’m an extremely emotional and empathetic person, something that can be exhausting at times but also means that I form deep connections with others and am able to write music that is extremely emotional and I feel really represents who I am.
Congratulations on winning Peoples Choice Folk Artist at the 2024 SA Music Awards, what does that award mean to you and how do you feel?
Thank you so much! It was completely unexpected – so much so that I was hiding at the back of the room when it got announced and then had a long walk to the stage! It was very exciting and it’s been so wonderful for me to realise and feel the support there is for me in the community. Sometimes it can feel like you’re working so hard and you’re not sure if anyone is really appreciating what you’re doing, and then something like this award happens to make you realise just how much support there is for you. It feels very special.Follow MAISIE B.
