Interviewer – Vicky Hebbs

Mercurial, magnetic and a creative maverick: this is Marét. Armed with a manifesto to explore creative freedom and a surprising sonic palette, Marét understands her vision is ambitious. However, she’s ready to deliver.

The singer, songwriter and creative director says, “My music germinates from tumultuous times, from beautiful moments and a calling for something bigger than I am. I believe it’s a calling that already exists in everyone; for the world to be operating in a different way because  it feels so chaotic, unsettling and overwhelming at times.” But that doesn’t mean Marét isn’t ready to get down.

Have you always been interested in songwriting and being a musician? When did it become a serious concern?
For me, music has always been a true calling. Creating music has always been with me so I don’t know life without it. There was never any question about it being my path. I released my first single 8 months ago but I have been honing my craft my whole life. I wanted my first offering to the world to have the resonance of all my experiences both musical and personal.

What kind of music did you grow up on? What artists inspired you and who are your major music influences now?
My earliest memories of music are of the great songwriters; Elton John, James Taylor, Sting, The Beatles as well as extraordinary artists, Whitney Houston, Stevie Wonder, Michael Jackson, Aretha Franklin. I’ve been very blessed to have a thorough and diverse musical listening education and I got a thirst for great music very early on. This has only strengthened throughout my life. I’m now really interested in artists that marry tradition with innovation. Kendrick Lamar, Janelle Monae, Pharrell, Lady Gaga and I always love a great vocalist. Yebba is a great American singer who is creating some incredible music at the moment. My main musical influences now are genres as a whole. I love taking elements from various styles and creating my own thing with it.

How would you describe your sound?
Soul infused Pop.

If someone had not yet listened to your music, what song from your body of work would you recommend they listen to first?
Vertigo

You are releasing a new EP early 2019. What can fans expect from your new releases?
I’m now making the music I’ve always wanted to make and people can expect deep honesty, a commitment to musical excellence and music that moves them.

Can you share the origins or inspiration for the EP?
When I embarked on creating the 6 songs that make up this EP I didn’t realise how profound the experience would be. My original aim was to share my story, and I feel very happy that I have achieved that, but it very quickly evolved further into sharing the journey of many of us living in these times. I really wanted to create something that would help people during challenging moments and bring joy and connection. Musically I wanted to extend myself further than ever before. I wanted to vocally challenge myself and bring my most authentic, raw sound to share my truth with everyone.

What are your plans for 2019? Will you be touring?
2019 will birth the next offering and will most definitely include live performances. My heart lies in sharing these songs face to face with everyone.

How did it feel when your singles such as Vertigo” and “Perfectly Imperfect” were so successful?
Releasing music and having it embraced is the greatest gift for an artist. I have been really blown away by the love for these songs and I can’t wait for everyone to hear this EP.

If you could perform or record with anyone, Alive or Dead, who would it be? And why?
I’d love to perform or write with Stevie Wonder. To be able to make music with such a visionary, an exceptional musician with such heart would be life changing I’d imagine.

Do you have any longer-term goals or aspirations for your music career?
For it to keep building. I really feel like I’m just getting started. Collaboration is a huge passion of mine so I’m looking forward to connecting with more artists and making music that I can’t even conceive of yet. I’m excited for what’s to come.

Finally, this is a paragraph dedicated to some quick discovery. Really corny, but for the fans, can you tell me your favorite album, artist, movie, place, drink, meal and person (living or dead) and some brief reasons why? Answer some or all please?
I’ve never been one to have favourites. Truly. I’m someone who gets really excited discovering something new, something I haven’t yet experienced and I’m so ready to find what’s next.
