Have you always wanted to be a musician?
I think so. I did want to be a vet nurse once. I did my school work experience in a veterinary hospital and I watched all the surgeries on the animals. It was pretty cool. I watched my neighbour’s dog get de-sexed also. But I still ended up a musician.

When did you start writing music?
I remember writing my first song when I was about 6. I told my friend we were writing a song together but that it couldn’t be about love because we were too young to know what love was. So we wrote about the world. “With the wind in the skies, I can feel the sunrise and the sky so blue filled with clouds.” It’s not a banger. I made my mum put chords to it and I have it recorded on cassette somewhere. I should make a remix. Or just bury it.

Which music did you grow up listening to?
Pop baby! Mariah Carey, Shania Twain, Alanis Morrisette, Jewel, The Spice Girls, Nelly Furtado, Lauryn Hill. Come at me.

How has it influenced your current style?
I would say I learned to write by listening to traditionally structured pop music and that’s how I still like to write today.  I tend to like songs that don’t rely on production for them to work, so if they were stripped back on guitar they would still be banging.

How would you describe your sound?
I’m gonna say Pop with feels. Feel pop.

Why do you think people resonate with your music?
I hope it’s because it’s about real shit and that it’s catchy?? I like to be honest and vulnerable but still strong and light hearted towards stuff that can sometimes be heavy.

Your new single C.B.F. ‘Can’t Be Fucked’ has just been released! Describe its origin and evolution.
Ha ha! I would LOVE to tell you. This guy only ‘kind of’ liked me, I only ‘kind of’ liked him back, we’d kind of made out, he kind of asked me out, then kind of un asked me out. Honestly neither of us really cared enough and it just kept going back and forth. I happened to be in studio when a stupid message came through and I was like dude, “I can’t be fucked with you and you can’t be fucked with me!” so I wrote C.B.F. with Xavier Dunn that day. It’s basically a song about all those people you waste your time with that aren’t forever, which I’ll admit can sometimes be a lot of fun.

Do you have any more new music in the works?
I sure do, the next single is already in the works, it will be the closest thing to a love song you’ll get from me.

Do you have any shows/tours coming up? What are you looking forward to, and what can the fans expect?
I do have shows coming up! I’m really excited about doing the Women In Pop Live show on March 20th.  It’s with two other awesome Sydney girls, SAYAH and SARAH WOLFE. I’m also doing a show tonight (March 6) with one of my closest friends who is also an amazing artist Bianca (who I believed you have interviewed as well), she is an actual bad ass and so talented. I’d like to think I’ve personally developed a lot in the last year and I’m really looking forward to writing music that reflects that and working with more female producers.

If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And why?
Man I just think Robyn is the coolest! Her songs are emotive but high energy, catchy af, she always has the sickest outfits, she dances crazy and she seems like she is always herself. Would love smash a champagne and sing my heart out with her. She’d have a rad crowd too ;)

What’s next for you in the near future?
Can I be lame and say that next for me in the near future is actually about finding hobbies? I really, really want to sew again, be creative in ways other than music.

What are your longer-term aspirations?
I’m going to be honest and say I don’t know, getting through the week is my goal at the moment. And being the most me I can be.

What is the best thing about performing to a live audience?
It’s one of the only times I’m not in my head thinking about everything that I have to do. You are fully present and connecting with people, it’s in real time and using a voice that was given to only you and you’re telling stories that no one else could ever express the way that you do.

Finally, a few questions for some quick answers –

MARSHES
Unveils new single
C.B.F.

PERFORMING AT INAUGURAL
WOMEN IN POP LIVE EVENT, MARCH 20

Sydney electronic pop songstress MARSHES releases her new single ‘C.B.F.’ (Can’t Be Fucked) today. Like her debut single M.I.A, C.B.F. was produced by Xavier Dunn and is a combination of textured melodic pop melodies and fiery but playful lyrics.

MARSHES says about her new single, “Can’t be fucked is about wasting time with people you actually don’t really care about, but you keep doing it anyway because there’s no one else.”

Her debut single ‘M.I.A.’ was supported by Triple j on Richard Kingsmill’s 2019 program and Home and Hosed, added to Unearthed and Sydney metro station, The Edge 96.1FM.

2019 was an eventful year for MARSHES. She’s was working as a nationally touring DJ almost every weekend at Music Festivals such as: Groovin’ The Moo or Field Day, Home Nightclub, Spring Racing Carnivals and supporting Hugh Jackman’s on his national show tour.
