“It is better to fail in originality than to succeed in imitation.” – Herman Melville

A quote that encapsulates this eclectic quintet, Mouth Culture hail from Leicester, UK; a small, bustling city that is usually disregarded when you think of the UK music scene. With the likes of fellow Leicester bands Kasabian and Easy Life, Mouth Culture are aiming to be a house hold name in their city.

Possessiveness, Lovelorn, Frustration, Bliss, Euphoria and Contentment; six expressions that individually capture the six singles released in 2019 – Mouth Culture take a deep dive into each phase of love and friendship through honest words and honest music; a direct result of 5 best friends sharing honest experiences.

How did you all find each other and decide to share your musical talents as a group?
We all knew each other from the local scene, and it just kinda fell into place. Fast-forward 2 years and we all live together and just do music all the time, which is the dream.

How would you describe your sound? Why do you think people resonate with your music?
Our sound is loud, emo inspired indie rock. We sub-consciously incorporate different influences into our sound. We write about all sorts of stuff, and it’s all pretty personal, we like to think that people resonate with that, a lot of it is melancholy and we’ve all still got that little emo inside us.

Which artist’s music and/or performance, past or present, inspires you today?
We are constantly inspired by different artists/genres, so this is going to be hard. As a collective, I would say the main ones would be bands that like to break genres and not be afraid to write whatever they want which is something we definitely strive for. The 1975, Tame Impala, Harry Styles, Yonaka, Bring Me The Horizon, Paramore to name a few.

Your new single is about to be released! Describe its origin and evolution.
‘say it in reverse’ was one of those songs that just kinda fell together, everything flowed so easily, which is one of the reasons we picked it as the first release for this year, it’s such a raw projection of our music it seemed like an obvious choice to us.
The song itself is about a relationship filled with toxicity, you both want to love each other, but you get so caught up in the petty s**t that you never get past fight night.

.

.

Is there an EP or Album on the drawing board?
We are recording an EP right now, there’ll be tons more songs coming yet, you’re just gonna have to wait for them.

Any tours or events coming up soon? What are you looking forward to, and what can the fans expect?
We had a busy 2020 planned before Corona locked us all down. Our April tour dates with Chapter and Verse and Breather have been pushed back which we are praying still goes ahead as all we wanna do is get on the road and play, but safety first! More music (obviously) we’ll be releasing stuff throughout the year without a doubt, but beyond that it’s difficult to say! We’re just rolling with the punches with this whole lockdown situation, none of us really know what’s possible right now.

If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you, choose? And why?
The 1975 for sure, their energy is so wild and their music is mad inspiring.

Do you have any long-term aspirations as a music artist?
Mouth Culture is a band for all of us, but we want it to become more than that, we want to reach as many people as possible; we want to see the world. Playing shows is our favourite thing to do, and playing them all over the globe is a dream. We wanna get out and see our fans in Brazil for sure, they’re always the most vocal.

What is the best thing about performing to a live audience? What has been the career highlight so far?
The best thing about performing is just feeling it. It is hard to explain how being on stage and getting lost in the moment feels, but it is so surreal. When we played the O2 in Leicester, it was the first time we heard a big crowd sing back to us, we got all the lights off for 15 Missed Calls and the crowd lit up the room with their phone lights, which knocked us for six. That show is definitely the highlight so far, it was nuts.
