Interview with Dave Bruce

Have you always wanted to be an artist? When did you get the song writing bug?
Yes! As long as I can remember. My first song was a little Christmas jingle I wrote when I was 5. My Ouma used to sing it and my mum and I still remember the melody and lyrics.
Briefly describe your journey to date from South Africa to Adelaide.
It was a pretty crazy time. A big adjustment changing cultures, schools, friends, and home at the age of 12. I think my new track is actually also inspired by the first duality I experienced immigrating and feeling that sense of not truly belonging.
How would you describe your sound? Alternative, Indie-Rock, Indie-pop? Why do you think fans resonate with your music?
I think people are really craving authentic sounds right now. With AI and such fabricated repetition happening, I think when artists bring even just a couple of surprises it really hits. I would say all of those genres. I can’t help but cross over genres even if I try to tame myself, there seems to be something that makes me not fit one category. I think I will have a dedicated fanbase that knows there will be surprises when they listen to me.
Which artist’s music and/or performance, past or present, inspires you today? Julia Jacklin, Lana Del Rio, Regina Spektor, Genevieve Stokes?
Yes I love all of them. I’m inspired by Florence and the Machine and Aurora’s stage presence, Billie Eilish’s vocal control, Julia Jacklin and Adrienne Lenker’s songwriting, Tash Sultana’s musical ability/live looping, Saya Gray and Caroline Polachek’s production and invention.
Your latest single ‘Life Is’ has just been released! What’s it all about? Describe its origin and evolution.
It’s origin was the life experience I gained on some travels. The people I met and the things I went through on the trip were the inspiration. Wrote it on the flight home and wrote the melodies as soon as I had a guitar in my hands.

Is there an EP or Album on the drawing board?
There certainly is! I am SO EXCITED for everyone to hear what’s to come. Looking forward to having a body of work out. Sticking to EPs whilst I’m still introducing myself to the world. :)
What tours and events are coming up? What are you looking forward to, and what can the fans expect?
I’ll be launching more music in 2025 and doing a headline show in my hometown at Jive on August 29th. Looking into organising a tour sometime in the year but don’t have any details yet!
If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And why?
I simply cannot choose one artist. Amy Winehouse, Cassandra Jenkins, Sharon Van Etten, Odette, Imogen Heap, Soccer Mommy, Hiatus Kaiyote Montaigne, The Paper Kites.
What are your long-term aspirations as a music artist and how are you progressing towards them?
Having a sustainable career, building community and a real fan base. Being able to explore music and keep doing my thing. Ultimately, I love being on stage and thrive there. I’d love to be bigger purely so I can have budget to put a huge show on for audiences.
With that in mind, what piece of advice would you give to an artist starting out?
I suppose society and trends will tell you what to do but make good music first, protect yourself, stay persistent but celebrate and be present in each moment on the journey because this is your life and time is precious. x
What is the best thing about performing to a live audience? What’s been the career highlight so far? Winning Best Live Act in South Australia at the National Live Music Awards in 2020?
That was a huge moment for me! Especially as purely a solo performer at the time. It gave me great confidence in the essence of this project moving forward. A highlight would be playing the SA Music Awards last year or playing Spacejams – people were dancing in the rain and a big rainbow came through in the last song. It was magic!!

Let’s finish with some ‘quickfire’ questions:
1. 2. 3. What is the craziest thing you’ve ever done?
Went skydiving super last minute one day. That was pretty fun!
What is the one topic you can talk about for hours?
The meaning of life and people’s spiritual viewpoints OR music gear. I love nerding out about guitar pedals etc.
What is the thing you like most about yourself?
Aw that’s such a nice question. I think there’s an openness/honesty and a purity or an innocence about me that I’ve tried to nurture and not lose even when life has tried to bring me down. Like my inner child is still with me and she was kind and saw everyone as beautiful, giving people the benefit of the doubt.
And finally, your favorites?
Album – Saya Gray’s latest album. I’m obsessed. (Currently also vibing with Lana Del Rey & Montaigne’s latest albums)
Artist – Cassandra Jenkins at the moment! She was my go-to for peace when I had a wisdom tooth taken out in the chair last week haha.
Movie – I have a favourite for each category but a few that came to mind straight away: Little Women, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, How to Train Your Dragon, Mean Girls, Once.
Place to visit – Any beach and South Africa, although I haven’t been back in too long.
Venue to play – The Gov, SA. (Such a good sound on stage and crowd every time I’ve played there.)
Food – Red Thai Curry. YUM.
Drink – Coffeeeeeee.
Person in History – Jesus – I would love some answers.
Tattoo – I have a couple of small ones. I actually have had a design made up for the last year but I’ve been too scared to commit. It’s just a cool mechanical, natural, flowey pattern. I’ll keep you posted!
I’m so sorry I am known for not being able to give a short answer! – Chérie
