How did you find each other and decide to share your musical talents as a group?
We were the only people on the school bus with decent music taste, honestly.

How would you describe your sound? Why do you think people resonate with your music?
I think ‘dream pop’ sums it up perfectly, we’re trying to tell real stories and emotions through pretty music. So I guess idk, we like the music we make, someone else with similar taste is bound to enjoy at least one of our songs.

Which artist’s music and/or performance, past or present, inspires you today?
Beach house; the 1975; slowdive; unknown mortal orchestra; they’re all incredible live. Definitely came away from those shows full of inspiration.

Your new EP is about to be released! Describe its origin and evolution.
It came about pretty naturally! We write quite steadily, so releases tend to slide into place through whatever time period we finished the songs in. On Our Minds is just the sound of being sad in 2019.

.

What are the signature pieces on the EP, and which is your favorite track?
Olive: my favourite is Never Leave, it’s just pure build and I love the tension and release.
Scout: Here’s The Thing is so personal and touching, I’m never over it.

Any tours or events coming up soon? What are you looking forward to, and what can the fans expect?
We’re playing a bunch of shows in NSW but that’s it for concrete shows for now, it’s just impossible to promise anything in this current environment tbh. We will be continuing to work very hard on new songs and videos though!

If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And why?
Olive: Ariana Grande, she’s the biggest star in the world and I would die to get real backstage exposure to that.
Scout: Radiohead. Just cause I’ve loved them forever and I’ve always dreamed of playing with them.

Do you have any long-term aspirations as a music artist?
To be able to do music as our only income, pretty simple really haha

What is the best thing about performing to a live audience? What’s been the career highlight so far?
Just watching people sing our songs back to us is an incredible experience, it’s probably the only time where we truly feel like our music has actually hit people in the same way that other people’s music has hit us.

Sydney EP Launch Show

A new EP has been a long time coming for Sydney inner west duo, EGOISM. Over the past few years they’ve been peppering the world with a string of shoegazey Pop singles which has landed them praise and admirers on radio and blogs both locally and internationally.

Now, following on from previous singles, “What Are We Doing?”, “You You”, and current single, Here’s the Thing, EGOISM have released their long-awaited EP On Our Minds.

The On Our Minds EP was written, recorded and produced by the duo in their bedrooms, mixed by Matthew Neighbour (The Avalanches, Matt Corby, Sky Ferreira) and funded by the triple j Level Up Grant. Two new tracks will be added to their already released singles. The band’s latest release, “Here’s the Thing” was recently premiered by triple j’s Good Nights show and added to Spotify’s “New Music Friday” and “Indie Arrivals” playlist.

‘’The two of you have captured such a special, incredibly moving and emotional moment’ – 5 stars – Claire Mooney triple j

“The songs on this EP were started in 2019 and finished in 2020, it was a rough fucking year. The world seemed to be doing ok, but everything inside us was disintegrating. Weird how 2020 has been the opposite, where the world is going insane but personally we’re doing pretty ok. We’re both kinda obsessed with feelings that run too deep to be summed up only with words. Sometimes music is what’s missing to explain the seemingly unexplainable. But anyway, that’s where On Our Minds comes from; a desperate attempt to share that sad little world, buzzing on internally.” – Scout and Olive

The past year has seen a slew of positive things happen for the duo such as two packed out BIGSOUND shows, being triple j Unearthed’s 11th most played artist, achieve the 5th and 8th most played songs on Fbi radio, get nominated for both “Song of the Year” and “Next Big Thing” in the Fbi radio SMAC awards, and have their single “You You” hit #1 on the Community Radio chart.
