Interview with Dave Bruce
Praise for DRAMA KING
“Drama King is a terrifically entertaining, profanity-laced and often mortifying litany of confrontations, party-hard messiness and self-immolation.” – MOJO
“It’s a charming, occasionally woozy, heart-on-your-sleeve sort of affair” – Classic Rock
“This is irreverent fun with the impact of an out of control freight train.” – Backseat Mafia

Have you always wanted to be an artist? When did you get the song writing bug?
I wanted to play music for as long as I can remember, and finally started when I was about 14, teaching myself the guitar on a nylon string I borrowed from my friend Tom which I restrung with steel strings and subsequently ruined the guitar. I was always into writing and once I could string a few chords together I started writing songs and never stopped.Briefly describe your journey to date.
I was in a two piece thrash band called Frozen Ocean when I was about 15 or 16, and we started gigging around the place when we were about 19 or 20 playing at places around Perth like the Hyde Park Hotel and the Swan Hotel. We played a lot and eventually got some decent support slots with Thee Oh Sees and Andrew WK to name a few. From there I started my own thing called Fucking Teeth with my buddies Adam and Anetta, that was when I started to take control of the song writing and that lead to me moving to Melbourne for a few years and getting started on the Peter Bibby thing I’m still doing today which has seen 4 releases and countless national tours plus a few international trips here and there. How would you describe your sound? Why do you think fans resonate with your music?
I think people resonate with my music because I am a man of the people and I write songs for the people. It’s a bit like that clothing brand FUBU, but music. My sound is quite rough and ready, somewhat unpolished, honest, I think Nick Allbrook (from POND) described my voice best as one of ‘Rotting Grapes’.Which artist’s music and/or performance, past or present, inspired you growing up, and who does today?
Growing up it was a selection of my own CD’s and my parents CD’s. From my collection it was foulmouthed punk music like NOFX and Guttermouth, from the folks stuff it was Paul Kelly, Bob Dylan, that kind of stuff.
Today I’m inspired by loads of stuff, from hip hop to hardcore, classical to techno, punk to folk. To name a few artists, MF Doom, Party Dozen, Andres Segovia, Blood Incantation, Timber Timbre.Your latest album ‘Drama King’ has just been released! Describe its origin and evolution.
It took shape over a few years of writing and recording songs at home, after the release of my last album Marge. Eventually I started to see a common theme throughout the songs, this kind of dissatisfaction of my situation and a desire to change, so I picked my favourite songs from a fairly large pool and worked on them until they were as good as I could get them and headed off to Melbourne to record with Dan Luscombe who proceeded to make the songs even better. What are the signature tracks and which ones can’t you wait to play live?
I think songs like The Arsehole, Companion Pony and Old DC are the most true to my style since the beginning of my recording career but really they are all signature tracks. We’ve been playing a lot of them live over the past few weeks at our residency at the Fremantle Buffalo Club. Baby Squid, The Arsehole, The One are a few of my favourites, we haven’t done Companion Pony yet, I’m pumped to do that one..
You have the ‘Drama King Australian Tour coming up? What are you looking forward to, and what can the fans expect?
I’m very excited to get back to the East Coast and play all the shows, particularly Melbourne. I have a lot of dear friends there who I rarely get to see. The fans can expect the best goddamn night of their lives, as we perform feats that no man has ever performed before. It’s like somewhere between a rock show and the equestrian olympics. If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And why?
Fred and Toodie Cole from Dead Moon. To witness one of rock n roll’s greatest love stories in action, and to truly learn the meaning of DIY.What are your long-term aspirations as a music artist and how are you progressing towards them?
The dream has always been to generate enough income from music that I don’t have to put loads of time and energy into working a job just to survive. On top of that I would like to tour the world more extensively. I’m progressing towards these things the only way I know how, keep writing and playing to the best of my ability and keeping bridges intact rather than burning them to the ground. With that in mind, what piece of advice would you give to an artist starting out?
The world does not revolve around you so don’t be an arsehole. What is the best thing about performing to a live audience? What’s been the career highlight so far?
There is an unparalleled joy that I get from performing live, the connection you create with the audience and having a little chat with people after the show, seeing that they are also full of joy. It’s a beautiful thing. Career highlight, I’m not too sure, there have been too many highlights to pick one. Here are three general questions your fans will find interesting about you:
What is the craziest thing you’ve ever done?
Climbed a crane on acid. What is the one topic you can talk about for hours?
The state of the music industry. What is the thing you like most about yourself?
It’s a draw between my chiseled legs and my deep, gravelly voice. Finally, just a few questions for some quick answers –

An artist who has been celebrated as inherently working-class and wholeheartedly independent, Bibby comes by this caution honestly, having cut his teeth in the rough-and-tumble underground rock scene centred around Perth’s Hyde Park Hotel. “I’d pay five bucks to go see punk bands every weekend, and that really fired me up,” he says. “I’d already been making music, but that made me want to perform, and that’s where I met people who I did my first recordings with.”
Bibby’s affable personality has gotten him plenty of mileage as a live act. He’s toured the U.S. with Pond and performed at the infamous open mic night at Pappy and Harriet’s in the California desert. He’s also taken the stage at international festivals such as Laneway, Falls, All Points East, South by Southwest and South Africa’s Rocking the Daisies while notching his fair share of rowdy headlining shows
