Peter Nigido

.

When you speak about dedication and honesty in music you don’t get much better than what’s coming out in Peter Nigido’s latest release ‘Turn a Page’. Walking such a delicate line between the faces of commercial temptation whilst relying on your gut to represent the soul of your music in such a way can drive even the most accustomed musician to an early grave.

We had the chance to sit down with the Melbourne based alt/electronic act to chat about what inspires his style of writing and how the music he writes affects him.

.

.

How would you describe your sound to someone who has not heard your music before?

I would describe my previous works as a combination of acoustic and electronic instruments with a cinematic feel. However my coming release is more up beat, electronic driven with rich high mid melodic hooks cutting through.

.

Your new single Turn a Page is truly impressive. What is the story, or the message behind it?

The message is to look within you and figure out. What makes you.. you? Can you look yourself in the eye and demand honesty? We can easily lie to ourselves. It’s about removing those layers and to take responsibility for our weaknesses and insecurities in life. To better our relationships in life. Always look to evolve humans. Go through the motions of failing, the motions of succeeding.. get through the motions. Get through what ever it is we need to get through figuring out the art of turning a page. The art is the process.. we are the pages.

.

Can you name any current contemporary music artists you would most like to be associated with?

1. Lucianblomkamp

2. Eves Karydas

3. Oolluu

4. Kalacoma

.

How would you describe your vocal/playing style to someone who has not heard you sing/play before?

I’d describe my vocal range as head deep, with stable roundness with low-end tones. My style of playing is quite introverted. I create my own space and environment with every performance.

.

How do go about go about creating your music? Is there a specific process for your song writing?

I wait until I’m feeling inspired. It usually starts with a few electronic beats and some melodic sections and from there it’s a building process.

.

Why did you decide to become a performer/songwriter?

I got frustrated playing in bands and felt the need to stand-alone and push my passion.

.

Do you follow a formula when you write?

I never followed any formulas until I began collaborating with Vince and James. I have released 2 singles and both do not have a chorus. Another single has a middle 8 that’s more like middle 32. My latest single is commercially structured; first time I have followed this order.

.

.

Who were your biggest writing and/or singing influences?

Early Bono from U2 singer/lyricist Defftones for that Alternative on edge feel Tool for the intelligence and music technicality (Please don’t use these guys as any of my references or influences on any publication, I was influenced by these guys but don’t sound like them).

.

What kinds of things inspire you to write or perform?

It’s a release of energy when I perform.. performing is therapeutic and I use the excuse of my performance to release what ever I am feeling at the time offering my energy to the audience. I also find the writing process is where I learn about myself.

.

Is there anything about your musical or personal history that you feel is important for your audiences to know?

My introduction to music was through dance. I studied Jazz Ballet and contemporary dance throughout my childhood years. I gave up dance and took up drums in my early teens, I have played in many bands up until 2009. Since the break up of my band Fathom and Fall I decided to front a solo project.

.

What do you believe makes you stand out as an artist?

The artistic deliverance of honesty in my music. I like to think my art is emotive and thought through. My lyrical content is mature.

.

What are your plans regarding future releases?

I plan to release my new EP post single release around October. I’m thinking to push it back in Feb 2019 to execute my set and visual stage FX and give proper attention to heavily publicise the launch event.

.

What are your long-term musical goals?

Composing new music with the right crew, making it count. Continue releasing art before product.

.

Is there anything about your musical or personal history that you feel is important for your audiences to know?

I don’t create music to be current. I create music to be effective, always in search for a physical reaction when writing or listening to music.

.

What has been the best part of this journey?

Collaborating with industry greats Vince and James Leigh. Creating work that has evolved over time setting high expectation levels in production quality and being able to meet them qualities is very rewarding. To setting myself a goal and sticking to it, creating my own opportunities and stepping out of my comfort zone from sitting behind the drum kit to fronting my own project.
