Have you always wanted to be a musician?
I don’t even know if I’d even call myself a musician now! From when I became aware of bands in the 90s, I wanted to be in one, before I could even play anything. In fact, it wasn’t until I played “Smells Like Teen Spirit” with a mate on the drums that I actually committed to learning guitar.

When did you get the song writing bug?
I was keen to write always – but I think it really bit me around the age of 16 or so when my friend Graham McCusker started teaching me about song arrangements and harmony.

How would you describe your sound?
I like to think of my sound as a bit of a Venn diagram of my 4 big Bs – The Beatles, Biffy Clyro, Bombay Bicycle Club and Blink-182. Funnily enough, I also got a B for music in high school…

Why do you think people resonate with your music?
I think the songs have something complex yet simple about them. Easy to understand on the surface but with lots to dig into if you’re interested.

Which artist’s music and/or performance, past or present, inspires you today?
I really love this performance of Springsteen playing Rosalita in Phoenix in 1978. I caught it one time on a late night re-run of the Old Grey Whistle Test and have always felt like it was the pinnacle of stage presence. Cool, fun and just sounding so great.

Your new single EVERYTHING YOU WANT has just been released!  Describe its origin and evolution.
It’s a song about not knowing how good we have it, finding ways to complicate and complain no matter the weather. Originally, I thought I was writing about someone else, but slowly I realised I was just being critical of myself.
I’m really amazed at how this one came out, it was much different entering the studio compared to when we left thanks to the collaborative efforts of my mates Kieran Logan and Graham McCusker. Helps me enjoy it more when it feels like I’m listening to my friend’s music rather than my own!

Your debut album OUTER MONOLOGUE is out soon, what are the main themes of the album?
Mostly I think the album is about me externally processing my own thoughts and other people’s perspectives. So, I’m sort of sharing my inner monologue…
Lots of the lyrics I reckon are written about adjusting to living in Australia and thinking about being away from home – ‘Friends’, ‘An Act of Contrition’ and ‘No Place to Die’ definitely have strong notes of homesickness, with more of it peppered throughout the album for sure.

Any tours or events coming up soon?
I’m hosting a listening party at The Gem in Collingwood 2pm-4pm on 19 October and then playing a show on 19 December at Shotkickers in Thornbury.

What are you looking forward to, and what can the fans expect?
Well in December I’m really looking forward to playing 2x sets with 2x different bands, playing both the album in full and all of my Xmas material. My Scottish friend Marie Collins (who features heavily on my tracks) will be visiting and playing with me too, which will be a real treat!

If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And why?
It’d have to be McCartney. Might sound basic and people might think he’s past his best, but I love him and think he’s still such an incredible artist. I know he’s had a lot of time to rehearse but to be able to pull of the shows he does at his age, being as nimble as he is, I find it so impressive. Rounds off a 3 hour show with Helter Skelter as well, as if his voice shouldn’t be knackered.
So I think he could probably keep up with me.

What are your long-term aspirations as a music artist and how are you progressing towards them?
My aspirations are fairly modest. I just hope that this album works as a platform for me to start seeing bigger audiences at my shows, maybe the odd festival, regional and interstate date here and there. Beyond that I would really love to play at the Barrowlands in Glasgow – I have my encore songs picked out already!

With that in mind, what piece of advice would you give to an artist starting out?
I think people shouldn’t worry so much about the bigger picture in the first instance. Linking up with other artists and playing some good shows should be the goal. If you build and build your audience, the opportunities will come to you.

What is the best thing about performing to a live audience?
I think, particularly when playing something new, it can really help solidify an idea. You can have all these great plans before you get up there, but you can tell instantly if something is working or not no matter how well rehearsed you are.

What’s been the career highlight so far?
Oh, there’s been a few – possibly shooting the video for my tune ‘Christmas Gear’ with BBC acting legend Richard Wilson back in 2019 was one. Just such a fun day and a great outcome.

Finally, a few questions for some quick answers –
