At just 21, Nelson born Robinson has been creating original music since her teens. Using writing and singing to express feelings, experiences, and ideas that can’t be easily articulated in everyday conversation.

Nothing To Regret follows debut single Don’t You Forget About Me and follow up track Crave You which has had over 1.2M streams on Spotify since release in December 2017.

A host of musical heavyweights worked on Nothing To Regret alongside Robinson. New Zealanders Joel Little (Khalid, Lorde) and Sam De Jong (30 Seconds to Mars, Noah Kahan) co-produced the song whilst Allie Crystal and Larzz Principato (Dua Lipa, Halsey) are credited as co-writes.

ROBINSON took the time to have a chat with Amnplify interviewer Brianna Denmeade about the newly released single, what it is like being 21 in the music industry and future music plans. Check it out!

R: Hi!

B: Hi, how are you going?

R: I’m really good thank you. How are you?

B: Yeah, I’m really good. How has everything been since the release of your recent single Nothing To Regret?

R: So exciting! It’s gone from chillen at home to being in Australia doing lots of promo. Which has been SO fun.

B: It must be such an adventure. So you’re here in Aus from NZ right now?

R: Yep. So we’re in Sydney, and off to Melbourne tomorrow.

B: And, how are you liking Australia? How are fans here reacting to Nothing To Regret?

R: I’m absolutely loving Australia. I’m half Australian, my dad is Australian. So I’m back home. And the reaction has been terrific, it has blown my mind! To have that support is amazing.

B: Oh wow that’s awesome. Well, it seems like you have the support of fans in both NZ and here in Aus.

R: Absolutely. They’re my two homes. It’s great. It’s awesome.

.

.

B: I heard Nothing To Regret on Triple J the other night driving home from work, so it must be great to know you’re being aired on Australian radio.

R: It is SO crazy! I had a friend message me the other day saying “I just heard you. My mum heard you and thought you were Taylor Swift.” It’s just like, wow.

B: Your recent track Nothing To Regret has received a lot of attention, but late last year you released two tracks, Crave You and Don’t You Forget About Me. What do the songs mean to you?

R: I think Nothing To Regret still holds an emotional story to it much like my previous two tracks. I think it was just so cool having the contrast with having happy production, which was definitely a change for me. But being energetic and dancey is a part of my personality I have always wanted to show.

B: Yeah the sound of Nothing To Regret is a bit more upbeat, and the music video looks like it was so much fun to film. You just get to dance around the living room singing, did you enjoy making the video for the single?

R: Absolutely. It was so much fun to film. It was sort of embarrassing dancing in front of that many people when I’m not a dancer. But it was so much fun because everyone there was so non-judgemental. I just went 150% and thought if I look stupid that’s fine, at least it will look like I’m having a good time.

B: It definitely looked like you were having a good time, and I think everyone has their own dance style. Most people just jump around and move their body.

R: Yeah! It’s relatable dancing. Everyone should do it. Haha.

.

.

B: I loved the film clip. I actually recently saw a stripped down version of Crave You on YouTube and the emotions of that song really pour through you in the video clip. Can you tell me more about what it means to you?

R: Yeah. I think it was about missing the routine and the company that a relationship brings more than the actual person. I think sometimes people have a hard time letting go of something that they know that is not necessarily good for them. But it is always hard to let go of the company you find in somebody. So yeah, that is where I drew that song from.

B: That is really authentic. I love your ability to articulate feelings through your music. When did you find that came so naturally to you? When did you find your interest in music?

R: I think I was always singing so that was always a big thing for me. I also really loved storytelling but I never thought of actually putting that into music. As I got older and could understand my own feelings it is just something that I started doing. And now songwriting is such a huge part of who I am and how I express myself. So I think my singing and songwriting go hand-in-hand very naturally now.

B: What is it like seeing it all come together with your first single release in 2018, a music video, and coming to Australia to promote it all?

R: I think there are real ‘pinch me’ moments when you realise people all around the world can listen to your music even if you haven’t been there yourself. I think it’s so crazy how music has that ability to reach people. It is amazing that people are receiving it well.

B: So with three single releases already can we expect to see an album anytime soon?

R: Yeah! The album is next on the cards for me. I am heading over to the UK than Sweden, and then onto all the live stuff.

B: And will there be an Aus tour in the near future?

R: I think we will definitely be touring once we get the album finished. I guess the label is keeping it a secret so I don’t get too excited. But I will be bringing my terrible dance moves to a stage near you!

B: You’ll have plenty of people in the front row to dance badly with you.

R: Yeah absolutely, it’ll be fun. ROBINSON moshpit would be hilarious. To come to my show you have to dance weird. Haha!

B: Haha! I’ll join you. It seems like 2018 is going to be a massive year for you and your music. You are only 21, does it feel crazy being so young and being signed by a label and releasing your music worldwide?

R: Aw, yeah. I think just travelling when you are young is so excited. My first trip to L.A. I questioned if I was really there. L.A. has that vibe where it feels really dreamy. Travelling for me has been so essential to my writing and development as a person. Just going independently and doing things on your own and figuring stuff out without the help of ‘Mum’.

B: Yeah, I completely agree. I would recommend to anyone that if you haven’t you should, just once, go travelling in a different culture solo. It’s really cool that you find it so lethargic to travel and write your music.

R: It’s amazing that music can take your places all around the world. It’s crazy.

B: It is incredible. And it seems like you have worked hard and deserve it, and I only hope you have a great 2018. And hopefully, I get to see you if you tour Australia?

R: Thank you so much. That would be so awesome to meet you in-person.

B: We can dance terribly together at your show!

R: Hahaha, yeah. Thanks, Brianna.

B: Bye!
