When did you start song writing? Has it always been a major part of your life?
I think I’ve always written songs in some shape or form but picking up a guitar as an early teen completely changed the game and I think that’s really when I started writing actual songs. It’s now so ingrained in my life that it would be impossible to go without.

How would you describe your sound?
Alchemy.
My sound is the combining and separating of opposite and complimenting elements to create some thing new and to take you on a journey of discovery.

You have just released your new EP, ‘Falling Forward’. Can you share the origins or inception of the EP? How has your own life informed the concepts you have written about?
The album spawned from my mental, emotional and spiritual journey of the past year. There were many challenges faced and some that are still being faced. The record came about because I had to find a way to let everything that was happening inside of me out- from debilitating illness through to continued recovery and more. These experiences kicked me into a different frame of mind and I’ve found myself looking at the world through a different lens, and so I tried to share a bit of that through my music and bring hope to others walking hard roads.

Is there a song on the album that is deeply personal to you or that you are proud of writing?
I love all the songs but if I have to choose one, it would be “The Fall”. It sums up everything into one song and was a personal breakthrough moment for me when I finished it.

What is it like to be a solo artist now as opposed to being part of an act?
I’m extremely excited about all the adventure and the challenge, as well as the musical freedom and experimentation it’s brought. I love performing solo and I love performing with an act- I’m just amped to be on stage in general but it is rather scary sometimes when you’re responsible for everything so it takes getting used to I guess.

What are your plans for 2020 and your solo career? Do you have plans to tour again when it is possible to?
Do you have any long-term goals or aspirations as a musician?
LOTS of music for the future for sure, this is just the beginning. I’ve always said I want to play on the stages of the world, so I plan to continue to do just that and to keep going until one day when I’m ancient and die with a guitar in my hands. Hopefully it will be possible for 2020 plans which have been made to be postponed rather than cancelled and that we can all safely go to shows again and make memories.

If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose?
That’s an incredibly tough question to answer because there are so many for so many different reasons but my answer today is Devin Townsend because I’d love to learn from his creative mind.

What is the best thing about performing to a live audience?
Seeing people connect on another level, the energy in the air and sharing a moment together where nothing else matters and fear falls away.

Finally, a few questions for some quick answers –

ROBYN FERGUSON
Female South African
Progressive Guitar Shredder
Releases New EP
‘Falling Forward’

A mere year since her dynamic debut solo release ALIZARIN, the South Africa-based Prog Rock extraordinaire Robyn Ferguson is back with her blistering sophomore release FALLING FORWARD.

The last year has not been easy for Robyn and FALLING FORWARD follows her mental, emotional and spiritual journey to rise above health challenges.

Robyn states that “there were many challenges faced and some that are still being faced. I am happy to say that, despite all these battles and still having some nerve damage and paralysis in parts of my body, (like 3 of the 5 fingers on my left hand), the creation of this album has been so liberating and exciting. This past year has completely kicked me into a different frame of mind and I’ve found myself looking at the world through a different lens. This year has pushed and pulled me like no other and I hope that this record will bring hope to those who are facing their own battles and inner demons.”

Once again this sophomore album is a complete solo undertaking and Robyn is grateful to Clinton Watts for his time, his skills and the efforts behind the mix and mastering of these songs.

Robyn also thanks each and every one for their support and affirms “this is just the beginning”!
