Have you always wanted to be a musician? When did you start writing music?
I’d always known playing music was something that made me happy, but I’d never really considered it as a career prospect until I was 16, which is when I first started songwriting.
How would you describe your sound?
Gritty, vintage blues/rock n roll with a modern twist
Why do you think people resonate with your music?
Good question. Perhaps because I’m an over thinker. I tend to really mull over my thoughts, and what feelings I want to get across, which shows in my songwriting style.
Which music did you grow up listening to? How has it inspired you?
I listened to a lot of strong, female songwriters like Kasey Chambers and Lindi Ortega growing up. I also used to exclusively listen to Country and Bluegrass music, so there is some Western elements that come across in my music.
Your new single “Slave” has just been released! Describe its origin and evolution.
“Slave” was written about a really crappy fast food job I had for 2 years. It was also at a time in my life where I was feeling really unfulfilled and tied down by unsuccessful relationships.
Do you have any more new music in the works?
I’m heading over to the Nashville for the first time next year, so I’m looking forward to co-writing and recording there.
You and your music has had its share of notice from the public and the industry (Gympie Muster Music, Queensland Music Awards, Ros Hales award, Bigsound showcase, etc.) in a short time. What do you put that down to especially? Hard work, good strategy, “right place / right time”, blinding talent?
It’s definitely a combination of all of those. Although in my experience a lot of it comes down to putting in the hard yards.
Any tours or events coming up soon? What are you looking forward to, and what can the fans expect?
I plan on touring in 2020. Right now I’m working on revamping my live shows and bringing a more energetic aspect to them.
If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And why?
Marlon Williams. He has the most amazing ethereal voice. He’s made that old style sound cool.
What’s next for you in 2019?
My single launch show! Also more songwriting and maybe some collaborations in the works.
Do you have any long-term aspirations as a music artist?
I plan on touring U.S (maybe I’ll even live there one day). I’d love to have a following over there. Songwriting is also a love of mine, so it’d be cool to co-write and write for other artists.
What is the best thing about performing to a live audience?
Watching the audience and trying to gauge what they’re feeling. It’s a surreal feeling experiencing someone be moved by your performance.

RUBY GILBERT
releases new Blues & Roots single
‘SLAVE’
Modern, yet irresistibly nostalgic, Brisbane singer-songwriter Ruby Gilbert returned recently with her latest single ‘Slave’, which was premiered via Pilerats.
Robust guitar riffs and drum beats synonymous with blues and roots immediately make an introduction, with little time before Ruby’s signature Americana-roots tinged vocals glide in. With alignments to artists Lanie Lane, Lindi Ortega & Lera Lynn, ‘Slave’ is a vintage blues and rock’n’roll infused track with a modern spin.
The single was inspired by her own turmoils of working for ‘the man’, and the feelings of displeasure in aspects of her personal life.
“‘Slave’ is about hating my day job. I also felt like a slave to the mundanity of day-to-day life and felt tied down to people and unsuccessful relationships”, explains Ruby.
But life is becoming less mundane for the songstress, as she is quickly becoming a rising star amongst the blues and roots scene. She’s been seen gracing stages across festivals such as Tamworth Country Music Fest, Urban Country Music Fest, Caloundra Fringe Festival and most recently the Gympie Music Muster, where she won the 2019 talent search.
Already receiving nominations early on in her career for her first single ‘Oh Bones’ at the 2018 Queensland Music Awards, along with supporting the likes of C.W. Stoneking, Justin Townes Earle and The Teskey Brothers. There’s no stopping Ruby as she begins to make a name for herself across the Australian music scene.
