Salmonella Dub, the New Zealand trail-blazers will be celebrating their 25th Anniversary in Australia with a special performance at Magnifika Pacifka as part of Festival 2018 for the Commonwealth Games. Leading up to this epic performance, the band had a chat with one of our Interviewers, Kelsey, about the ride so far.

Who or what inspired you to pursue a career in music?
I was forced into piano lessons at the age of 8. I used to get whacked across the knuckles with a ruler by my piano teacher for going out of time with my chromatic scales. After 7 years of sitting at the piano questioning who the hell came up with an 8 note octave and why? I decided to start bending my own notation.
.
Was there a specific time or event that you could pin point when you decided that music was something that you wanted to make a career out of?
When I was about 13 years old. The punk seen hit and I was hooked.
.
How would you best describe your sound?
An eclectic hybrid of dub, rock, and landscape influenced soundscape journeys.
.
Who are your main musical influences?
Everything except for Opera.
.
.
What are the themes explored on the your new single celebrating 25 years, ‘World She Waits’?
World She Waits is a loping musical journey in a down beat tempo exploring the heart felt themes of indigenous land rights. We dub it for the people, dub it like we’re equal.
.
What most inspires the song writing?
Everything. We have an open door policy and tend to build our tracks from the foundations up. This often starts with riddum section jams. If it feels good them start developing layers on top.
.
You’ve just done a tour celebrating 25th Anniversary of the band. How did those shows go?
Awesome. We did 3 big summer shows here in Aotearoa to celebrate our 25th birthday playing to over 21,000 people all up. It so cool to see the diversity of our audience grow with us both culturally and across the ages. We now have 2 year olds through to 84 year olds on our dancefloor!
.
What’s your favourite track you guys have ever released?
Wytaliba. Long story short, we played a harvest party for the Wytaliba community back in 2000. Little did we know they had just taken the NSW federal police through the courts with a civil claim for a false search and had been awards 1.3 million in damages. The clan sent us a sample from their evidence which we use on the track. It has a helicopter landing and a police officer clearly stating “We’ve got NO warrant” Classic!
.
.
Have you ever asked a musician or band for a photo or autograph?
No. I am not big on autographs. Peeps ask us for them but it always seems to be a shame having to write over our album artwork.
.
Do you ever get nervous before a gig?
I am usually too busy. However, I do have re-occuring dreams of not having all my gear at a show or been too late set up and the guys having to start without me. What would Yung say? LOL
.
What are your goals for 2018 with your music career?
We are working on a new album and after our Common Wealth Games show on the Gold Coast in April we plan to hunker down and finish the next tracks for that. We have more shows around Aotearoa planned for June and will be back in Oz for Salmonella Dub Sound System shows in Cairns on July 7th and Brunswick Heads on July 8th. Later in the year we will be back in OZ with the full live band to test out new album tracks.
