Born to perish? This statement does not apply to the Thrash Metal legends DESTRUCTION, though their new album Born To Perish will certainly create a furore when it’s unleashed on August 9th. The brand-new line-up featuring Canadian drum animal Randy Black and Swiss shred-master Damir Eskić, together with veterans Schmier and Mike, is here to bring you musical destruction. This is a new chapter in the long, impressive history of the band.
Lyric wise, Born To Perish is a statement against power-hungry politicians, senseless hate, and all the world’s madness. Schmier explains – “The vulture on the cover is something like an “anti-eagle” that symbolizes the insatiable greed of people. I always wonder what drives these people. Wealthy people want to be millionaires. Millionaires want to be billionaires, and so on. This seems to be an endless spiral.”
Likewise, DESTRUCTION seems to accelerate endlessly forwards in 2019 more than ever.
.
Schmier derives plenty of satisfaction out of sharing his years of metal knowledge and experience with younger bands; and is critical of some ‘rockstars’ that don’t.
“Like Richie Blackmore (Deep Purple / Rainbow) you know, he’s a guy that writes his own music and says – Fuck the world, I don’t care what you do.”
On the relevance of thrash metal in 2019 as well as gaining a new generation of fans –
“Thrashers love energy and I think that’s why young kids are retouching that ground again. It’s a very energetic and revolutionary kind of music.
I don’t see older people creating a thrash band. The older guys are still playing it, yes. But older guys like to play the blues or hard rock. It’s the energy in thrash that attracts the younger people. I totally understand it.
I still love playing it, it keeps me young. And it’s good to see a whole new generation is kinda picking it up.”
