An Exclusive Interview with Simone Simons from Epica: 23 Years of Symphonic Metal, New Beginnings, and a Spiraling Future
For fans of symphonic metal, Epica needs no introduction. With a career spanning over two decades, this Dutch band, fronted by the incomparable Simone Simons, has enchanted listeners worldwide with their blend of classical music and heavy metal. We had the privilege of speaking with Simone herself as she shared insights about the band’s journey, their upcoming album Aspiral, and her reflections on life, music, and the future.
A Band Born From Passion and Serendipity
Epica’s journey began in 2002 when guitarist Mark Jansen, after leaving his previous band After Forever, sought to form something new. At the time, Simone was still in high school, but when Mark couldn’t find a suitable vocalist, she stepped in to help. This humble beginning quickly evolved into something much larger, and Simone’s incredible voice became the band’s defining characteristic. “Epica has been my school, my university, and my job all in one,” she reflects, highlighting how much the band has shaped both her personal and professional life.
.
.
Classical Roots and Metal Influence
Simone’s voice has always set her apart in the world of symphonic metal, and her training is a key factor in its power and versatility. “I started with pop music, singing along to artists like Janet Jackson and Mariah Carey, but soon switched to classical training because it challenged me more,” she shares. “I also fell in love with metal bands like Nightwish, Lacuna Coil, and The Gathering, and that’s when I decided to combine the two genres.”
Her early experiences with classical music laid the foundation for Epica’s symphonic sound, where operatic vocals seamlessly blend with heavy riffs and orchestral arrangements. It’s a sound that’s become synonymous with the band over the years, and one that resonates deeply with fans.
The Epica Family: A Story of Growth, Love, and Professionalism
One of the most intriguing aspects of Epica’s success is the long-standing partnership between Simone and Mark, both musically and personally. While many bands struggle with interpersonal relationships, Simone and Mark have managed to evolve together both on and off the stage. “We both realized that our relationship wasn’t romantic anymore, but we still shared a deep passion for music, so we focused on that,” Simone explains. “It’s been beautiful to keep that professional connection strong throughout the years.”

The Evolution of Aspiral
The band’s upcoming album, Aspiral, which is set for release on April 11th, represents a new chapter for Epica. The album’s title was inspired by the work of Polish sculptor Szukalski and his eponymous bronze sculpture from 1965. It’s a reflection of the theme of transformation and renewal that runs through the album. “Out of destruction comes creation,” Simone explains. “A spiral is about growing and rebuilding, and that’s what this album is about—finding light even in dark times.”
The creative process for Aspiral was a journey of exploration. During a tour stop in North America, bassist and composer Rob van der Loo introduced Simone to a documentary about Szukalski, which sparked a series of conversations about his art and how it could inspire their music. From there, the track Aspiral was born, and it became a guiding force for the album. “The song Aspiral really encapsulates the message of the album,” Simone says.
Signature Tracks and Personal Favorites
While it’s hard to pick favorites, Simone has a few standout tracks from Aspiral that she’s especially proud of. “The Grand Saga of Existence is a classic Epica song, representing everything we stand for—epic, cinematic, and emotional,” she says. “Obsidian Heart is a darker, more raw ballad, while Aspiral itself is full of hope and energy. Each track reflects a different part of our journey.”
Simone adds that the music of Epica is designed to inspire listeners to persevere. “Even though we’re living in tough times, we want to remind people that there’s always light at the end of the tunnel, and every struggle is worth it because it makes you stronger.”

Touring and the Future
With the album’s release comes a new tour, and Simone is looking forward to hitting the road again. “We’ll be playing in New York, Atlanta, and Los Angeles, before heading to Mexico. We’re really excited to bring Aspiral to our fans.”
When asked about future aspirations, Simone speaks of continuing Epica’s slow, steady growth. “We’ve already had the privilege of so many amazing experiences, but there’s always room for more. Our journey has never been about overnight success; it’s about creating music that grows with us and connects with people.”
Advice for aspiring musicians as someone who started her career at such a young age, Simone has plenty of advice for today’s up-and-coming artists, particularly those navigating the challenges of streaming and social media. “Don’t give up on your dreams,” she urges.
“Listen to your intuition and keep pushing forward, even if it seems like things aren’t working out. Build a movement around your music, not around social media. At the end of the day, it’s your art and performance that will speak for you.”
Final Thoughts
After over two decades in the business, Simone Simons remains as passionate about her music and Epica’s journey as she was when she first started. With the upcoming release of Aspiral, fans can look forward to a fresh yet familiar sound that’s sure to inspire and uplift. Whether you’re a long-time follower of Epica or a newcomer to their music, one thing is certain—this band’s story is far from over.
Thank you to Simone Simons for taking the time to share her journey with us. We can’t wait to see where the Aspiral takes Epica next.
