Orlando, Florida alternative rock/metalcore outfit Sleeping With Sirens have returned to Australian soil for their Gossip World Tour! Last here in 2015 on a string of sold-out shows, Sleeping With Sirens are here to celebrate the release of their latest album, Gossip, which saw its release on September 22 2017.

Kaycee Cool recently caught up with the band for an update.

I read that this album was the longest to record, how was the studio process different to previous records?

In a lot of different ways. You know we went in to the record thinking we had a bunch of songs ready but we didn’t, our producer kind of broke us down and said “you guys can do a lot better”, so it became a very tedious process of finding the right songs and finding the right vibe for everything and figuring out the direction of the record and when we went in to record our producer wanted us all to record separately and away from each other so no one was around when I would play guitar parts and no one was around when Kellin did his vocals and it’s because our producer really wanted to evoke each individuals persons you know emotions in to the songs as appose to kinda feeding off somebody else and seeing what their vibe was. He really wanted to hone in what each person kind of delivered to the band with different characteristics and it definitely made for a very different process because we couldn’t lean on anybody else but it made us all much more confident and a lot stronger in our abilities as song writers but also as musicians in general.

.

Out of the 11 songs on Gossip, which is most significant to you and why?

I think.. ah that’s a tough question. I feel like One Man Army was a stand out for me and also Need To Know. I feel like Need To Know was a song that initially when Kellin recorded a demo for it, it got me really choked up and it made me feel emotional more so because I could relate to what he was talking about but more so just hearing how gradual Kellin was, how open and how he was really wearing his heart on his sleeve with that song so I have a real close kinship with that song because I knew how deep it was for him to play it so it made me want to strive even more so to provide you know the guitar work and the atmosphere for that song to properly deliver it. So I would say Need To Know probably is my favourite song on the record, the one I feel most close to.

.

How does it feel knowing your music can influence someone’s life in such a positive way?

How does it make me feel? I believe you could never put that in to words what the feeling is. I think more so when fans tell us that you know when they come to meet and greets or I meet them outside of the show and they tell us that, my first response to them is… “you inspired and motivated me and changed my life”, for as much as they’ve done for us you know, they’ve done equal if not more for our personal lives and changed our lives, they’re the reason that we keep on doing what we do and strive to do better and to be motivated and inspired by their stories you know and when our fans tell us about how we’ve saved their lives or gotten them through hard times and everything with high school or help them get through whatever they’re coping with at the time, that’s what it’s all about for us, you know thats why I wanted to be in the band because I knew what music did for me growing up and how bands changed my life and it’s almost like I kind of pay it forward.

.

Which song from Gossip do you think the fans have taken to the most during live shows?

I think that Legends has been the one that the fans have really you know gotten an attachment to and really gotten behind. When we released that song we had so many people with inspiring stories that came out of that, that the song was really uplifting for them and we related to a lot of persona accomplishments in their lives so its a song that we’re really proud of and a song we’ve definitely seen fans get very attached to. It’s a beautiful thing to see people, it’s cool to see it kind of fan around the world no matter where we are, what country we’re in and it’s a song we’re immensely and emotionally proud of.

Y’all have been around for almost 10 years, how do you think the evolution of social media has impacted your band?

Oh man, that’s a difficult question, you know I have such a love hate relationship with social media. You know the one part of it that we’re so proud and stoked is that we’re able to have that connection, you know being able to get their stories first hand from them on Twitter or Instagram or Facebook but then you kind of lose a bit of the mystery but more so that privacy of your life with social media. You know now people know where we are at all times, let’s say if you choose to have an outing or even an accident people can know more about your social life than even your family members and so it’s about that kind of weird fine line between you know showing our appreciation for fans but also trying to maintain some level of privacy especially with all of those you know private times, some of us are married and there are just some things about our lives that we keep private and sometimes that can be hard with social media, but I also think social media definitely helped music more so than negative you know.

.

With 5 records under your belt, is it difficult to decide which songs make the setlist?

It definitely is, it’s such a process in itself that Kellin and Jack have become really good at doing before tours you know that’s kind of the beauty of social media, bringing that back in.. is that you know we get a really good sense of what people want to hear and what people are more prone to wanting to get crazy for when they come out to see us so that definitely helps with getting the input from fans, it’s about you know singing the songs that they want to come out and hear as opposed to exactly what we want to play. We definitely do everything we cab to keep our set as energetic as possible so it depends really, we incorporate a lot of the old songs kind of introducing new songs for people who haven’t heard those either.

.

Tonight is your first show back in aus in 3 years what can we expect?

It’s going to he really sweaty, our shows are just really adrenaline driven and just tons and tons of energy and we make it that theres no way we walk off stage not completely drenched in sweat so we do our best to get that point across. We want you to come and have a good time, as a band at our live shows we want to have as much fun as possible and to have everyone in that room joining in the fun. That’s exactly what you can expect when you come to a Sleeping With Sirens show.

.

That’s all from me, is their anything else you’d like to say to your fans?

We’re just ready to rock out in Australia, we’re all ready to come back and it’s only our first day here. It’s something we always look forward to when finishing an album like “when are we gonna do Australia?!”, it’s amazing to be back here and we can’t wait to hang out with as many people as possible, it’s the most fun in the world.
