It was released Friday, March 23. Showcasing the sextets trademark surf-soul vibes, sun-soaked guitars and intoxicating swagger, Sometimes, Always, Never, Maybe is just what the doctor ordered, so get ready to take a big swig!

Sun Sap had a little chat with Amnplify, check it out below…

.

.

Who or what inspired you to pursue a career in music?

A love for music is what inspires us most, we love playing and always will, whether we are doing it as Sun Sap or not. Though, I wouldn’t really call it a career in music as we all still work jobs on the side.

.

Was there a specific time or event that you could pin point when you decided that music was something that you wanted to make a career out of?

I always loved music, even before I started playing it captured me in a way nothing else did but I couldn’t pin point an exact moment when I decided it was something I wanted to pursue.

.

How would you best describe your sound?

The sound for the EP would best be described as Surf/Soul/Psychedelic Rock
with a hint of Honky-Tonk/Country.

.

Who are your main musical influences?

Musically, some of our biggest influences are mostly bands from the 60’s like The Kinks, The Beatles, early Rolling Stones, Velvet Underground, Jefferson Airplane, etc. Some modern bands we are into are Allah-Lah’s, Black Angels, BJM, Foxygen, The Lemon Twigs and Rosa Maria.

.

.

What are the themes explored on the debut EP Sometimes, Always, Never, Maybe?

The main themes explored in the EP are the usual things; love, lust, sorrow, heartbreak, etc. The EP is a collection of songs written at a time when a couple of us were going though difficult times in relationships so it mainly about our personal experiences. Though we tried to write in a narrative way so the songs were accessible to the listener too.

.

What most inspires the song writing?

Our own experiences in life as well as the music we listen to or whats going on in the world around us. Sometimes you’re not in control of what inspires you, it slips through to song writing subconsciously and you don’t realise what inspired a song until after it is written and you listen back to it.

.

How long did it take to put together this EP? You’ve released a few singles already, how did you decide which songs to release ahead of the EP?

The EP was written in Summer last year and we spent about 2 weeks in the studio between August and October recording it. It was obvious to us which songs to include on the EP as they were all written in the same time period and shared common themes.

.

This project formed out of demos you’d written while abroad. Was it put together mainly in one country or were you travelling around a lot?

Adam and Shaun were travelling in the US and I was still in Australia, we sent each other demo’s that we were working on at the time but it wasn’t until they returned to Aus that we finished the demo’s and recorded them.

.

.

What’s your favourite track you guys have ever released?

Probably would be Time Enough For Love from the EP.

.

Have you ever asked a musician or band for a photo or autograph?

No, not that I wouldn’t. I just haven’t met any musicians whose autograph I want (yet).

.

You guys have a bunch of shows coming up over April & May. Are there any shows you’re particularly excited for?

We’re really looking forward to playing Franks Wild Years in Thirroul. Shaun and I live close by so it will be good play a local show.

.

What are your goals for 2018 with your music career?

We are going to try to record and release as much music as we can this year. We are already recording our next batch of songs, which should be on either an EP or album later this year.
