London artist/producer, Tatiana DeMaria, drops a new single recently in anticipation for her first solo EP debut due next year. While she revealed bits and pieces of this new project throughout the year, we got one more glimpse at what’s to come from this one woman powerhouse with “Make Me Feel.” Her upcoming solo EP, containing previously released singles “London Don’t Lie”, “Too Much”, and “What It Is About You”, moves across the the spectrum of rock, pop, and R&B, pairing some ruthless honesty with explosive choruses and deep, colorful production. The result is a sound utterly unique in today’s “anything-goes” pop landscape. Tatiana has also lent her vocals to electronic producer LEFTI’s “A Different Kind”.
.
.
How did you first get into music? When did it become a serious concern?
I started my first band when I was 11, and honestly was pretty serious about it from the jump. It’s not that I was determined to have a career in music or understood what that would look like, I just wanted to make music and feel certain things that I felt when playing and rocking out and that couldn’t wait.
.
What kind of music did you listen to growing up?
Everything really, though more focused on punk rock and hip hop/ rap, but as long as I can relate to the lyrics and feel the melody, I’m in whatever the style.
.
Who are your major music influences? What kinds of genres inspire you or spark your interest most?
The Clash, 2Pac, Nirvana, Michael Jackson, NOFX. I’m generally drawn to artists that deliver a certain depth and honesty in their lyrics, a rawness in their delivery with great melodies that I feel.
.
Have you always made your own music? If not, how did you get into song writing?
Yes, I’ve always made my own music. I was 11, saw people doing it, believed everyone wrote their own music, felt the need to make music so I just started writing alone in my room. My eldest brother had an electric guitar he didn’t use that was sitting in my sister’s room. I had watched him play House of The Rising Sun as a kid and thought he was the coolest. I started with the guitar and bands that I loved; at the time NOFX, Green Day, The Clash. Writing songs followed fairly naturally for me.
.
What is your song writing process? Do you start with an idea or a tune or something else first?
All of the above really. Depends and varies on the day, the feeling, and how things might accidentally get started. Always good to switch it up from time to time. Sometimes music first, lyrics freestyled over. Sometimes a lyrical idea, then music. Sometimes both totally separately and then pieced together. Whatever works.
.
You’re releasing your debut EP next year. Can you share the origins, inspiration and evolution of the EP?
The EP is made up of some of the songs that have been coming out this year, and in the new year I’ll be looking to release a whole lot more music including a full length album. The EP itself and the order in which I’ve released the songs this year was designed to take people from something closer to my sound with my band TAT, into a newer sound that comprises more of the solo sound. The sound is a blend of a lot of facets of myself as a musician in general, but I wanted this year to take my fans on a bit of a journey and lead them to where I’m at now and where the next steps will take us.
.
I really like your single, ‘Make Me Feel’! What inspired you to write it?
Thanks! Life and the things I was going through at the time.
.
.
For anyone who hasn’t heard your music yet, how would you describe your ‘sound’?
Haven’t quite figured that one out yet. Real lyrics, melodies, some beats, some real instruments. How would you describe it?
.
If someone had never listened to Tatiana DeMaria before, what song of yours would you recommend to them if they could only listen to one?
That’s a tough call. The one I would play that seems to best sum me up is not out yet. Right now I’d probably say ‘London Don’t Lie’ or ‘Make Me Feel’.
.
What are your plans for after the EP release? Are you planning to tour anytime soon?
Yes, 2018 was an introduction to the solo material. 2019 will bring a lot more new music and tours, I’m looking forward to it.
.
If you could tour or perform anywhere in the world, where would it be?
We were meant to tour Japan on Soho Lights with TAT years ago and had to cancel sadly, I’d want to re-up and get out to Japan.
.
If you could pick absolutely anyone to bring on tour with you, whom would you pick and why? (Dead or Alive)
My dog. Big spoon.
.
What are your major goals or milestones for the future?
Dropping this solo album followed by world domination of course.
.
Finally, this is a paragraph dedicated to some quick discovery. Really corny, but for the fans, can you tell me your favorite:
Album – Photo.
Artist – The Clash
Movie – What’s New Pussycat or The Graduate
Place – Nature
Meal – Shishbarak. It’s a middle eastern dish and I could take a fucking bath in it.
Thanks for the questions. All the best
