Interview with

TYSON COLMAN

.

Tyson Colman

.

Gold Coast-based country music singer songwriter Tyson Colman has grown up with the true essence of country music and this is very much reflected in his original material. The self-taught guitar player from his teen years could sing from the time he could talk. His vocals nowadays are classically trained with a stop-you-in-your-tracks clean, unique quality.

Recently Tyson Colman had a chat with AMNplify about his latest album Breaking Free, his music in general and his aspirations yet to be fulfilled. Check it out below!

.

.

Who or what inspired you to pursue a career in music?

I have loved singing since I was a little boy. I have always wanted to perform and sing. I grew up listening to classic Australian country music, American country and fifties rock and roll. I have pursued a career in music all my life.

.

How would you best describe your sound?

My sound is definitely country with an occasional dash of rock and roll, bluegrass and rockabilly.

.

Who are your main musical influences?

My major musical influences would be Elvis Presley, Hank Williams, Dolly Parton and Slim Dusty. More recently, I’ve been influenced by artists like Keith Urban, Garth Brooks, Chris Isaak and George Strait.

.

What are the themes explored on the Breaking Free album?

Breaking Free is about taking control of your life and your choices. Find out what is holding you back in life and “break Free of those chains”, so that you can follow your dreams. I want to inspire people to make their own dreams a reality.

.

How does the new album differ to what you’ve released in the past?

This album follows the path set by my last album, From Now On, yet differs in the fact that this album is more focused and the material is aimed at a broader market. Hopefully the songs appeal to people all over the world, rather than just a local Australian perspective.

What inspires your song writing?

My songs are inspired by my life, the people I’ve met and the stories that I have to tell. Sometimes I might find a particular theme that I want to write about and I will focus on that but mostly, I write songs that come from something that has happened in my own life.

.

What makes you different to similar sounding artists?

I don’t really think that I sound like anyone else. I have tried to find my own sound without copying anyone else’s style. I have a great deal of control over my musical direction, so I am free to try new ideas and experiment with sounds. Being myself and following my own path makes me different to any other artists with a similar style.

.

What has been your most memorable career highlight to date?

In February and March last year, I travelled to the United States for a promotional tour for six weeks. I got to visit Nashville, Tennessee, Memphis, Branson, Oklahoma City, Fort Worth and Houston amongst several other cities. I was also fortunate enough to be able to perform at the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville, (where Garth Brooks and Taylor Swift were discovered). The trip definitely ticked off several bucket list moments for me.

.

What is something you would like to achieve career-wise that you haven’t done yet?

I really would like to perform more in the United States, (as well as back home here in Australia of course). I would also like to see my music move to the next level and hear more of my music on commercial radio. As a songwriter, I would love to have one of my songs performed by a major Country artist.

.

If you could play any venue in the world, where would it be and why?

The venue that I would most love to perform in would have to be The Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, as I have dreamed of performing there since I was a young man. It is the holy grail of venues for a country singer.
