How did the band come together? Is there someone who is a “driving force”, or do you all make decisions together?
Duncan and Luke started the band and were sending slam riffs and gutterals over voicenotes. Kris was on bass before moving to guitar. Tom also joined in 2016. Chris and Lwandile joined in 2018, and the band has been a unit since then. Touring all over US, Europe, UK, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.
How would you describe your sound? Why do you think people resonate with your music?
Vulvodynia’s sound started a bit more slam, but as a band grows and the musicians too, it seems to add spice to the music. We all have different tastes and influences, but collectively it always creates the “Vulvodynia sound”. Recently we have explored some melodic, tech, death and slam sounds. It’s constantly evolving, yet staying true to the core sound.
Which artist’s music and/or performance, past or present, inspires you today?
All the artists we tour with tend to inspire us. Everytime we hit the road with a new band we discover new sounds, ideas and tricks. It’s a great way to see what works and what doesn’t appeal to you. Other than that we all listen to groundbreaking, heavy and progressive music. We like to push ourselves and our musical boundaries.
Your new Album has just been released! Describe its originand evolution.
We started by having weekly writing sessions and got into the flow of things. We were on the way to do an Asian tour and Europe, but then COVID came. It was actually a blessing in disguise as this allowed us to stay at home and write and record together. We spent a full year writing and recording the album which was then sent to Christian Donaldson for Mixing and Mastering.
Any tours or events coming up soon? What are you looking forward to, and what can the fans expect?
We have a sick tour lined up for August/September with Upon a Burning Body, Signs of the Swarm, and Decayer. We’re also working on finalizing Aus/NZ tour with a possibility of Asia too in November/December.

How has COVID affected you to date? What have you introduced to balance the losses from missed events?
Like I said before it actually helped us to have time to write the album. However, once it was released we had to wait 6 months before we could tour and take it to the people. We lost a lot of tours and gigs, but we tried to keep pushing merch, online presence, and kept planning for future tours. So that when the restrictions lifted we could hit the road straight away!
If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And why?
It would be great to tour with legendary bands like Morbid Angel, Death, Suffocation, Cannibal Corpse, etc. To learn from their years of experience.
And it’s always great to tour with modern bands like Suicide Silence, Thy Art is Murder, Lorna Shore, etc. To keep a finger on the pulse on what is happening now in metal.
Do you have any long-term aspirations as a music artist?
I run a recording studio and I’ve been performing music for 20 years. This is what I do. I will tour, record and produce music until I die. Even if it kills me.
What is the best thing about performing to a live audience? What’s been the career highlight so far?
The connection. Seeing the look in their eyes and feeling the energy. It’s imaginary, but also more real than anything. Meeting the fans and sharing the music is the best. Without them we wouldn’t exist.
