At just 21 years old, William Le Brun is already showing signs of becoming one of Australia’s most exciting rising stars. I caught up with him recently to talk about his musical journey so far, the experience of being on Australian Idol, and where he’s heading next. The warmth, charm, and talent are unmistakable — and if his debut single is anything to go by, we’re witnessing the beginning of something special.

From Karaoke to Centre Stage

William’s musical passion started young. From living room performances for his family to pestering music teachers with his own song ideas, music has always been a part of his DNA. Encouraged by his supportive parents (and a few rolling eyes when it came to scales practice), William developed a love for piano, guitar, and live performance.

What started with family karaoke nights during COVID soon evolved into singing at weddings, corporate gigs, and more — until one bold decision changed everything.

“The craziest thing I’ve ever done?” he laughs. “Auditioning for Australian Idol!”

Idol: A Life-Changing Leap

William’s Idol experience was surreal and intense, catapulting him into the national spotlight. After debating whether to audition, he took the leap — and it paid off in spades. Performing live in front of celebrity judges and a massive audience could be daunting for anyone, but William stood tall.

“Marcia had a soft spot for me, I think,” he says. “She gave me this look right before I sang — it just helped me centre myself. And getting the fast pass… I was not expecting that at all.”

Despite the high-pressure environment, he found the backstage vibe surprisingly supportive and light-hearted, even from famously sharp-tongued Kyle.

“They’re all lovely people. Approachable, funny, warm.”

Swing Meets Pop – The Sound of William Le Brun

Calling himself “Australia’s King of Swing” might sound bold, but William backs it up with a voice that blends contemporary pop with classic jazz and swing vibes. Think Michael Bublé meets Harry Styles at a 1960s cocktail party.

His debut single “Drowning in a Diamond” captures that unique blend — cinematic and romantic with a modern twist.

“It’s about seeing someone across the room, falling in love with them, but not finding the courage to approach them… until you finally do. It’s very James Bond meets Paris romance.”

Big Shows, Bigger Dreams

Fresh off two sold-out headline shows — one in Melbourne and another in Geelong — the fan support from Idol has clearly stuck around. And William is hungry for more.

“I want to take the show on the road — Sydney, Gold Coast, Perth, Adelaide, even Tasmania. I promised the fans I’d come say thank you, and I intend to keep that promise.”

There’s an EP in the works, aiming for an October release. It’ll continue the sound he introduced on Idol, but also give listeners a glimpse into the deeper musical layers he’s developing.

Influences, Inspiration, and the Big E

When asked about the artists who’ve shaped him, William doesn’t hesitate:

“Elvis. Frank Sinatra. Nat King Cole. Timeless voices. And lately I’ve been really into Teddy Swims. That voice is just… unbelievable.”

His family, particularly his parents, are his rock.

“They’ve always been there — small weddings or big stages, always in the front row.”

Mental Strength in the Spotlight

With the whirlwind of Idol comes exposure, pressure, and public scrutiny — something William handles with surprising maturity.

“Social media can be tough, but you’ve got to focus on the people who love what you do. Not the one comment that’s negative. I do it because I love it.”

What’s Next?

With his EP on the way and a national tour in the pipeline, William is laying the groundwork for a long-term career — not just a flash-in-the-pan moment.

“It’s like feeding people a feast. Idol was the feast. Now I’ve got to keep feeding them. Keep showing up. Keep creating.”

He dreams of supporting Michael Bublé on tour, performing in Europe, and maybe — just maybe — cooking up a storm on his own music and cooking show (he makes a killer lasagna, by the way).

The Final Word

William may only be 21, but he’s already navigating the ups and downs of the music industry with clarity and purpose. As we wrapped up the chat, one thing was clear — this isn’t just the start of a career; it’s the beginning of a journey that could go anywhere.

“Performing live is what I love most. Seeing the audience react, connecting with them — that’s what it’s all about.”

So keep your eyes on William Le Brun — because the best is yet to come.
