How did the band come together? Is there someone who is a “driving force”, or do you all make decisions together?
We were all members of other local bands that had fallen apart for various reasons – then after those projects finished the stars aligned, we all found each other, and the rest is history. As with any functional partnership; we tend to make big decisions all together but it’s worked out really beautifully that we all drive certain aspects of the band individually. Zach really is the driving force behind music creation/art, Morgan handles art/finances/bookings and Matt handles communications/socials.

How would you describe your sound? Why do you think people resonate with your music?
Our sound has changed so much over the years as our influences shift and we explore different aspects of our creativity. For this new album, maybe Coldplay meets Foo Fighters? As for what people find in our music: I think the biggest thing we hear from our long time fans is the honesty in the lyrics. Zach really writes from the heart and isn’t afraid to let his emotions show which I think resonates with a lot people.

Which artist’s music and/or performance, past or present, inspires you today?
We all get really fired up by passionate performances and honest music. Bands like “Catfish and the Bottlemen” and “Paramore” come to mind. But also heavier stuff like “Architects” and “Bring me the Horizon” are really inspiring.

Your new album ‘Make a Rainbow and Put it in the Sky is about to be released! Describe its origin and evolution.
Getting this album together has been a huge effort from all of us. We recorded some of the tracks before Covid – then the industry just died. So born from that a lot of the themes on this new album all have roots in addressing mental health and finding some sort of peace and belonging. A lot of these lyrics were penned a long time ago but still ring true for us today and we hope that will be the case for everyone who listens to the album. Some songs are super personal and Zach’s put a lot of his experiences over the years into them, and in a much more visceral way than usual. We really wanted to be honest and make sure that showed in all these songs. The name ‘Make a Rainbow and Put it in the Sky’ for us, speaks to the journey we have all been on to put this album out. The ups and downs have been unfathomable but the results are something we’ll forever be proud of.

What are the signature tracks, and which is your favourite?
Oh boy, that’s tough. I think we went into the studio with about 30 tracks we could stem from, then we got down to maybe 15 we really liked, then we cut some more from the album; so I think all the tracks that made the album in the end are all kind of favourites. “Run” is super fun to play though, “Exit Plan” has the best chorus, “Help” is a jam.

Any tours or events coming up soon? What are you looking forward to, and what can the fans expect?
We have an album tour in June/July, playing major cities on the East Coast. What I love most about our shows is that it can be whatever you need it to be! Some people grab a beer and stand in back to soak up their favourite tracks while others are jammed into the pit screaming every word. There’s a really welcoming atmosphere that we really have to thank our fans for, our fans are incredible! These album tour shows are going to be really special and we are so excited to be out there with all of you soon!

If you could perform with any music artist, Alive or Dead, who would you choose? And why?
Geez – we have had the privilege of touring with a lot of people we would have put on this list already! Amazing bands like “Taking Back Sunday”, “Anberlin”, “Silverstein” but maybe “Andersen Pakk”? If for nothing more than just standing back and marvelling at his drumming.

What are your long-term aspirations as a music artist and how are you progressing towards them?
Honestly – just writing good music. Thanks all we really want. Releasing music that we are proud of and we believe in.

With that in mind, what piece of advice would you give to an artist starting out?
Just do it. Everything else will come if you are doing what you love already.

What is the best thing about performing to a live audience? What’s been the career highlight so far?
Playing live makes music ‘real’ to us, and it’s bloody fun. Having people take the time to come to a show is really special to us and we never take it for granted that ANYONE will be at a show so to have a room full of people singing your songs back at you and enjoying your music is really special. Career highlight would be this random show we played at Woolly Mammoth one time – packed room, big vibe – was great.
