With his new single Wide Eyes, Jack Raymond is coming in as a force to be reckoned with much like the rolling clouds that barrel down the hills of Jack’s home town of Harrietville, Victoria. Wide Eyes is a big song filled with ambition and purpose. It aims to uplift and with its sweeping guitars and spirited momentum Jack has crafted a track that will settle favourably deep within listeners.

The song embraces the energetic tempo of indie folk and folk rock. He’s admitted to being inspired by other inspirational folk groups like Mumford & Song and Ben Howard and with Wide Eyes, Jack Raymond sounds determined to not only get you dancing but to make you feel the lyrics and music. It’s emotional music, in that this song makes you feel like anything is possible. As Jack sings, “When you Held me close and kept me warm/This Big Bad World Brought me lovin’/wide eyes in the morning sun”, it sounds like a promise. With sparkling guitars and a mandolin, a playful piano and the soft tempo of the rhythm serving as the backdrop for Jack’s gruff and raw vocals it is a polished catchy affair.

Wide Eyes was recorded at Yama-Nui studio in Queensland and Jack’s connection to the Australian landscape and story beams through. Full of life and brimming with confidence Jack must be very proud of the final product which demonstrates an artist in control of his songwriting. Not surprising given Jack has been honing his craft performing at several festivals including Kiama Blues Fest and The Gympie Muster as well as being a finalist in the Australian Busking Championship.

This is a song to play in the quiet moments of life, or when you want to remember a moment forever with friends. Give it your attention and let yourself be charmed by Jack Raymond’s graceful sonic soundscape.

Words about the creation of ‘WIDE EYES’

Recording with Steve from Yama-nui studios was a real treat, the way that he treated this song was a real experience. From writing Wide Eyes to recording it was only about a week so it was a very fresh song, I went in with an idea and a basic layout. Within an afternoon we had a fun song down to demo stages. I called in Lawrence Maynard from “Those Folk” to assist with mandolin to really bring the track to life. Steve played the keys and bass on this track and put his producing knowledge into it. – Jack Raymond
