It’s been 10 years since Jason Aldean last played in Australia, so the Aldean Army were out in force for the FULL THROTTLE TOUR Sunday night at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre.
The tour takes in 7 stops, playing Arenas in New Zealand, Brisbane, Melbourne & Sydney, & headlining the new outdoor Sunburnt Country Festival events.
Early fans chilled in the courtyard with live music & starter drinks, yet there were barely any stragglers to their seats before opener Corey Kent took the stage.
Clearly the audience were aware of the outstanding set to come.
With support slots for a handful of American country music legends (like Morgan Wallen & Jon Pardi) behind him, this is Corey’s second time on the road with Jason Aldean, & second time performing in Australia.
Coreys’ backdrop & guitar scratch plate are emblazoned with a Black Bandana-also the name of his last album. We hear its gold selling #1 hit This Heart midway through a set of loud country rock that’s been delivered in a powerful textured voice that easily makes the big raspy high notes.
Ain’t My Day has the crowd chanting along early on, before two brand new singles – viral sensation Empty Words, & the Koe Wetzel collaboration Rocky Mountain Low.
Other highlights are Triple Platinum #1 Wild As Her, & a couple of sing-along covers – Oasis’ Champagne Supernova, & a funky version of The Beatles Come Together, which saw each member of the band have a solo moment to close out the set.
Jason Aldean is an American country music superstar – he’s ACM’s Artist of the Decade (2018), a 5 time Grammy Nominee, & multi-Platinum Award winner.
In the 21 years since his self-titled debut, Aldean has achieved 30 Number One Hits, released on a 2CD collection late last year.
Incredibly, his upcoming 12th studio album SONGS ABOUT US, due out April 24th, has already spawned another #1, with How Far Does A Goodbye Go.
“WHEN THE LIGHTS COME ON, EVERYBODY’S SCREAMING”
Aldean begins this hit-filled 22 song set with his debut single Hicktown, in the blazing lights of a semi trailer barrelling straight for the crowd – the most impressive backdrop I’ve ever seen. He leans over his guitarist & strums the guitar before standing centre stage, a fan billowing the hem of his short sleeve button up.
It feels like we’re in a music video.
The backdrop is a dramatic element as it changes throughout the show, at times creating an illusion that the band is playing in a deep warehouse.
Aldean says their version of country is a little country & a little rock n roll.
With the band’s onstage presence & long, loud guitar riffs, at times the country part is living in the lyrics. Traditional country themes of drinking, break ups, & small town living abound in tracks like Whiskey Drink, Trouble With A Heartbreak, & Try That In A Small Town.
The crowd waved their phone lights during 2009’s ballad The Truth, which gained new life trending in tik tok clips last year.
Intro’ing Dirt Road Anthem Jason says he was cautioned not to record it because it’s “not country enough” – but it turned out to be the song that took him from playing to 20 people in a club, to selling out arenas.
Great songs will draw in fans, & it’s the connection with an audience that keeps them. Jason sang from every side of the stage, slapping hands with the crowd, taking selfies on people’s phones, & inciting audience participation throughout the show. Two ladies near me needed no encouragement, & weren’t the only ones dancing at their seats & singing every single word all night.
After Jason played piano to duet with Carrie Underwood on the big screen for If I Didn’t Love You, the entire crowd were on their feet for the final two songs, My Kinda Party, & She’s Country.
As promised, the Full Throttle show carried us from the new album, to the first album, & all the albums between – Aldean & the boys blew it up.
