The night before the Good Things Festival kicked off in Melbourne, Ukrainian metal powerhouses Jinjer hit the stage with local favourites Earth Caller and Future Static. If it is power that you want, then the sheer power of these performers is enough to kick your teeth.

Kicking it off was Melbourne prog-metalcore act Future Static. With high energy from the start, the local crowd also came out strong. Music that dripped with heaviness, emotion and raw expression- you would be hard-pressed to find somebody in that room who couldn’t feel what Future Static was throwing down. Vocalist Amariah Cook has such a commanding presence onstage, but she never drowned out the other band members. Playing a set list that jumped between heavy breakdowns and aggressive attitude, to melodic and sometimes even bouncy and fun, their versatility was evident. Whoever booked Future Static to open the show clearly did their research, there were definitely new fans walking out that night.

Earth Caller were next to hit the stage. Fresh off their European tour and ready to go. Playing their first show on Australian soil in a short while, the tour energy was still going strong and there was no slowing them down. Encouraging the crowd to get moving, even if it meant navigating the unfortunately placed pole right in the centre of the pit. There is something to say about Earth Caller’s brand of metalcore and it is all good. Power punching, karate pit inciting and gang vocal inducing- they never neglect the core side of metalcore. Playing tracks from throughout their almost decade-long career, it was evident they had nailed down their set to perfection. The inclusion of Missteeq into their regular line-up has paid off, adding a whole new element to their live sound. Judging from the calibre of performance Earth Caller put on this night, it won’t be a long time before we see them moving up the slots at festivals and tours around the world.

During Earth Caller’s set, frontman Josh Collard paid tribute to the women in the metal scene, especially the ones performing on this bill. From the second Jinjer hit the stage, there is no denying the sheer talent of the woman that graced that stage- with frontwoman Tatiana Shmayluk leading the charge. Ripping through The Corner Hotel with the ever-loved track Teacher, Teacher the Melbourne crowd was instantly transfixed by the Ukrainian band. With such a strong, charismatic singer, the other band members can be a little overshadowed. Just like with Future Static though, you can’t listen to Jinjer without being absolutely blown away at how incredibly talented every single member of that band is.

Vladislav Ulasevish’s drumming is complex, rhythmic and flicking between brutal and jazzy. It really is the backbone of their music. Beefing up that rhythm section while adding his own flair, bass player Eugene Abdukhanov could be considered one of the best in the genre. You cannot look past guitarist Roman Ibramkhalilov either. With a guitar tone that can make you weep, switching effortlessly between some of the most melodic and clean sound, to heavy and brutal riffs- the elements he adds to their music is vital to what makes Jinjer, Jinjer. A singer that needs no introduction, Tatiana is an absolute force to be reckoned with. Even more impressive live than on any recordings, the effortless way she switches between soulful and tantalising clean vocals, to monstrous growls is no easy feat.

One of the highlights of the almost 90-minute set was their powerful performance of Home Back. While they put their heart and soul into every song they perform, you can feel the intensity and emotion that drives this song. With a show of solidarity from the Melbourne audience, if music can change the world, then surely some energy was put out into the universe during that performance.

It is hard to put into words just how incredible a band Jinjer is. On a technical level, their musicianship and songwriting as a band and individually are some of the best of this generation. Performance-wise, they are tantalising, hypnotising, heavy and almost flawless. Unlike other technically brilliant bands though, there is no loss of soul. It still feels raw and, going back to the buzzword of the day, powerful.

Jinjer is one of the best bands in the world right now and their performance at The Corner Hotel in Richmond just solidified that claim.
