In Jovi Skyler’s upcoming single “Tattoos”, that was released on Friday 12th November, the singer and songwriter tackles some pretty hefty themes and pervasive feelings that were probably exasperated by the long winter of lockdown he went through in Sydney. “Tattoos” burns with a fathomless ache and also reexamines the alt-rock and indie grunge sound with a contemporary flair.

In Skyler’s own words, “Tattoos is about loneliness, depression, suicidal ideation and the courage to endure and overcome”, and Skyler has never shied away from exposing his demons. His previous single, “Danger Land”, addressed the insidious impact of PTSD and its effects on one’s mental health. In “Tattoos”, Skyler sings about the alienation and disassociation he feels from the world around him set against melodic guitars that blow up with massive drums and fuzzed-out guitars in the chorus. This is a song that could nestle itself quite nicely beside the tracks of Sonic Youth, Mudhoney and The Breeders. “Tattoos” is a heady, nostalgic mix of that early 1990s fringe sound that evolved from a molten genre of rock, punk and psych-rock to create that distinct indie grunge vibe. The song vibrates with euphonic energy with Skyler’s flinty vocals as he dives deep to explore mental health issues.

The production of the song is a little messy in an intentional way which works well, it’s those imperfect imperfections that give the song authenticity, adding layers of texture. The song is intense but despite the heavy premise, Skyler conveys a whimsy that keeps “Tattoos” moving along with a car roaring down a long highway rather than getting itself too stuck in the mire.

For lovers of the pure sound of indie-rock “Tattoos” is likely to speak to you on several levels. It also reveals that Skyler has honed the ability to address the real issues we are going through that’s not addressed enough.

About JOVI SKYLER

Jovi Skyler is set to release a dreamy nostalgic official music video “Tattoos” on November 12th 2021.  Potent, powerful and anthemic 90s grunge, a track concerning  loneliness, depression, suicidal ideation and the courage to endure and overcome.

Jovi Skyler is an emerging Sydneysider punk-rock singer-songwriter. Skyler has dedicated many years to his craft as a songwriter since picking up the guitar. Having studied at the Conservatorium Of Music for a spell before dropping out, he proceeded to live abroad in Europe for over two years gigging under various monikers as a staunch soloist playing only original songs unplugged in cafes, bars and other venues. It was during this time that Jovi’s consistent exposure to entertainment hubs fermented his creative fervour and desire to focus a light on the dynamics of heady distractions.

Jovi Skyler’s self-titled debut EP released at the start of the global pandemic. A distorted jaunt of twisted post-grunge structures and incisive takes on the surrounding world. Its second single “We Went to the Zoo” received extensive support on US College radio and support throughout Australia’s Community Radio Network and some international radio stations in Japan, Germany, Canada, and the UK.

Armed with a full tank of socio-cultural observations, Jovi and his guitar are primed to go, guaranteed to get you grooving with its wild and rebellious swagger.
