““Our Place” is at its heart a song about acceptance and compassion using broad brushstrokes of indie-rock to paint the message.”

Junior Bones, a Melbourne based three-piece band that delivers songs embued with a deeper social commentary, have announced their arrival with their debut sweeping indie-rock track “Our Place”.

The song came to be after a senior politician made tone-deaf remarks saying that pacific islanders would be welcomed to work as Australian fruit pickers only once their homes were irrevocably claimed by rising sea levels. That callous rhetoric got singer Ryan Temby inspired. “Our Place is a protest song. It’s a song about pro inclusivity, empathy and shared experience countering classism, privilege and nationalism.” After sending a rough demo to John Baxter at Small Sanctuary Records, it was clear that the song had bones. Joined by Paul Inglis (guitars/keys), Gavin Kerr (drums) and Tom Bullock (bass), Junior Bones the band and “Our Place” began to take form.

““Our Place” aims to call out politicians’ lack of accountability when it comes to climate change”

“Our Place” is at its heart a song about acceptance and compassion using broad brushstrokes of indie-rock to paint the message. The song swells with melancholic grandness in the verses as it rushes up to the chorus like taking a running start before hurling oneself off a cliff to dive into the sea below. The catharsis comes in with layered choir-like vocals that are propelled along with some nifty fretwork and fierce drums and piano.

“Our Place” is reminiscent of other narrative-driven storytellers like Gang of Youths, Holy Holy and Birds Of Tokyo with the group stitching their penchant for indie-pop, rock and new wave with sweeping powerhouse melodies and observations about the state and inequities prevalent in our society. Song production also faced a couple of hardships with the vocals and guitars being home recordings due to lockdown and the drums and bass parts were laid down whenever restrictions eased up, so it’s no small feat to end up a song that sounds so full and lustrous.

“Our Place” aims to call out politicians’ lack of accountability when it comes to climate change and the status quo and does so with melodic awesomeness that keeps you hooked in for another listen.

BIO

Melbourne-based indie rock band Junior Bones writes beautiful, resonant and emotive songs with catchy melodies and dreamy atmospherics.

Drawing influence from psych-rock, indie-pop, post-punk, and new wave, songwriter Ryan Temby draws you in with imagery and storytelling exploring themes of reflection, experience, morality and existentialism.

The origins of the band kicked off when Temby, unemployed and burnt out from corporate life, had his own eat, pray, love epiphany whilst on a road trip through the Utah desert – deciding to rescue his guitar out of storage and reconnect with his musical roots.

Temby landed at the door of long-time friend and collaborator Paul Inglis (guitars/keys) after getting back on home soil – their musical styles instantly complementary and locking back into when they played together in Melbourne alt rock band Prettymess.  Songs were written, demo’s were recorded and once they caught the attention of Gavin Kerr (drums), Tom Bullock (bass) and John Baxter at Small Sanctuary Records, Junior Bones was born.

The futility of capitalism, corporatisation and societal norms is a subtle but constant underlying theme in Temby’s lyrics but is brought front and centre with their first single Our Place – an unapologetic protest aimed directly at the lack of accountability from Australian political leaders in regard to climate change and entrenched classism.

The band name started as a joke – with Temby observing that ‘this is hard – all the good band names have been taken – even the dog has a great band name’.  And in the resulting silence that followed, the guys assumed that Junior Bones the dog probably wouldn’t mind all that much if they named the band after him.
