Have you ever wondered what it would sound like if a Disney princess had an indie-pop self discovery song? Well look no further because Justina Ward’s newest song “One Bag” is the answer! The singer, originally from Gawler, South Australia, debuted earlier this year in July with her song ‘Spare Some Light’.

The song starts with both a single ukulele and Justina’s hauntingly beautiful vocals. The artistic choice to have the song stripped back allows her vocals to really be the star of the song. Her unique vocal tone and the raw emotion shine through as she sings, baring her soul and her emotions to the world. The ooh’s in the melody of the chorus were catchy and memorable, with the harmonies appearing on them and  throughout the song being the cherry on top of her vocals. They amplify the haunting vibe to the song and add a layer of depth that is a delight to the ears. The melody and harmonies in the bridge gave me goosebumps all over my body because it sounded so beautiful!

Justina Ward’s lyrics are a documentation of her own self discovery that reaches and comforts the hearts of the listener. The messages of looking inside of yourself and having patience for your own journey to find yourself are also communicated in the song, taking the listener on a spiritual and emotional journey. In lyrics and in musical style, Justina Ward’s ‘One Bag’ can be compared to the music of Sara Bareilles (if Sara played ukulele). They were relatable with a comforting message, the music was interesting with differing dynamics that were built up and broken down, particularly in the bridge.

In a world so over-saturated with media telling you what to be and what to do, it’s important to detach and take time out for yourself. ‘One Bag’ is a tribute to those who may be feeling lost in this fast-paced world, and an anthem of reassurance that patience and self-reflection will be the answer. Justina Ward’s passionate vocals paired with her intimate lyrics touch the very soul of her audience. Her talent as a musician is undeniable and her music is relatable, emotional, yet easy to listen to. I’m excited to see what the future brings for Justina Ward!
