The Cut After The First by Australian-based singer-songwriter Kaiwyn is his anticipated release following his successful debut single, Dedicated To You, and sophomore song, You’re My Kind. Both of these singles garnered buzz and earned a positive reaction from local community radio networks that embraced the song. With this new single Kaiwyn pushes himself into the realm of pleasant feel good hooks and gentle melodies to craft a song that aims to soothe the soul.

Kaiwyn has been putting the work into his songwriting career even as he continues his day job as a healthcare professional. Finding time to focus on his music is no easy feat but The Cut After The First suggests that Kaiwyn has the balance right. The song is an indie-pop folk track that is infused with cheery and bright guitars, strings and a warm bass that brings everything together. The lyrics paint an artist who is pondering deeply about the emotional scars that are left by those we once loved. It’s emotional without being overblown, and with Kaiwyn’s sweet voice, there is an allure to the song that keeps you listening. Albeit, at times, his voice is lost within the big instrumentation. With more experience, and his musical style defined his voice will no doubt resonate more strongly.
However, for a third release, Kaiwyn should be chuffed. The song swells with glorious grandeur in parts without losing its innocent appeal. It suggests that Kaiwyn is not afraid to dream audaciously when it comes to his songs and it is a strength he should absolutely run with.
The Cut After The First may find itself the darling of independent radio once more so it’ll be worth your while to check out this little slice of sunshine from this emerging Australian artist.

About KAIWYN
Kaiwyn (pronounced “Kai” “wern”) is an Australian based singer songwriter who chose to complete his medical degree while remains passionately knotted with his thirst for music. Kaiwyn has always been a creative being and melodically inclined growing up in the outskirts of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Kaiwyn started writing blogs and poems initially, reflecting on the experiences and emotions faced during teenage years. It gradually transpired into lyrical works, incorporating with multitudes of contrasting music elements from various cultures in his childhood area. He was given piano and music lessons at young age, but eventually halted as he did not enjoy the graded examinations at the end of each course. Restriction to theories and other frameworks limits his creativity so he developed his own style of song writing, without mastering any musical instruments! This special song vault continued to expand as time passed, and most were kept dormant whilst undergoing medical training in Australia.
After graduating medical school, Kaiwyn was stationed in Tamworth, NSW (Australian Capital for Country Music) for internship and residency where he participated in the Tamworth Busking Championships 2015, mainly performing covers and a few of his originals. Kaiwyn continued working for years in healthcare (branching into psychiatry as his main subspecialty) up until feeling inundated during the pandemic era. With determination and sparked motivation to balance both passions, he subsequently reached out to a local music producer in his rotating work lifestyle, Simon Dobson at Lakehouse Audio to formally start working on these self-written songs from years back.
His first single, “Dedicated to You” was released digitally in August 2022, written back in 2011 was an ode to Kaiwyn’s anamnesis, and “You’re My Kind” released in November 2022, written back in 2008. Both tracks were favourably received by local community radios via AMRAP. “You’re My Kind” was also topping the listeners’ votes at No.1 on the Discovery Program at Pulse FM Hawkesbury Radio for 4 weeks in January 2023.
Kaiwyn is continuing to aim to strike a perfect balance between music and medicine. He finds music very therapeutic and refreshing; hence more songs are being produced as we speak. The next single, “The Cut After the First” is one of the first few songs written back in high school, which entails a strong theme of realisation and insight, reflecting on this “lesson learnt” memory. Along with B-side “Future Me” included, focusing on the power of strings and genuine storytelling, as it comes into full circle of the acceptance in moving on with a sigh of relief and grief, contemplating for an alternate ending yet remaining faithful for this bittersweet memory.
